Hi Guys, there is a post on AVS explaining how to modify the power supply from a PG series projector from 120 to 220 volts ( cut 2 solder links and replace a fuse ).
Has anyone ever tried this or have any info regarding how wise it is to attempt it ? I live in Germany and it would be a whole lot easier to plus the unit into the Mains rather than the 1kw step down transformer I currently use.
Thanks.

Yes, you CAN do that. But if you want to also modify the filter, you'll need to replace a few parts as well. You COULD plug it into a good line noise filter instead and get the same result, though.

Thanks Tinman. Do I have to modify the filter as well or is it optional ?

Sorry - just realised I asked a dumb question there - If I do he mod then in order to get the power filtered properly I'd need to use a filtered power stip rather than rely on the internal one.... thanks Sir.

Do you really need to do this?
On the Xtra a couple of jumpers and a fuse change convert it from Half Wave Rectified at 110v to Full Wave Rectified at 220v. The filters are after the rectifiers so they are intact either way.
Is the PG Plus different?

Hi - it is not a necessity but plugging the projector straight into the mains rather than using a 1kw step down transformer if preferrable - both from a cost saving and practical point of view. I live in a very old german apartment with only 2 mains rings for the whole place. The 450 or so watts I'm drawing ( but not using ) is causing problems - when I boil a kettle in my kitchen I have to make sure I turn other stuff off r the circuit breaker in the basement will trip... so is a bit of a pain as it really.
In terms of whether it is possible to do the conversion sucessfully for the pg, someone posted ages ago they they had done the mod on their rebadged pg6 ( and they noted they'd only cut the 2 jumpers rather than changing the fuse and the filtering etc ) so I can't see why not. Happy to be told otherwise as I new to this. Thanks.

Uhhh..... YES you DO need to change the FUSE!!! For obvious reasons. The current demand is different at 220V. The 110 fuse is rated at a higher current and will smoke the projector before it blows.
The filters are just the AC pre-filters for line noise. Not the DC filters after the diodes. Under IDEAL conditions you change the caps and resistors in the PRE-Filter to match the 50Hz 220V line. But a plug in line noise filter will do the same thing.
