anybody have , used or seen a TiVo HD?
can they be used as simple recorders and playback?
what sort of inputs do they have? VGA? Component?
I have an old Sony SVR 2000 and its great. Runs linux. I can mod the OS and upgrade the HDs. Is this new box similar?

TiVo HD is really just a cable box replacement--that's it market. Basically, you rent a CableCARD from your cable company for $3 per month instead of a box for $13 per month. You then buy a Tivo for $250. So, you get the better TiVo experience with an ROI of 2 years. Really, that is all it is.
Additionally, it has OTA tuners in it. They have no inputs you can record from. They also have no firewire out for you to record to D-VHS.
Specs are here:
https://www3.tivo.com/store/boxes.do
For a box to just record to, you need this:
http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=4306
But the Gefen can't move HD off its hard drive, so it is pretty much useless from what I can tell.
Its 2008 and there is still nothing that can replace D-VHS--how silly is that?!?!?!?

Do what, get the HD off it for archiving?
Some guys were working on shell access to it which would let you copy the files off. Google it as see where they got.

I have a couple of Directv hr10-250 HD Tivo DVR. Obsolete for Directv HD though. New HD satellites are mpeg4. This receiver only supports mpeg2. Will still receive OTA HD stations without activation but won't function as a DVR unless you pay Directv $5/month. Too bad Directv no longer support these units for HD; they're pretty nice receivers. I'm trying to sell them on eBay.
Inputs:
2 satelite and 2 OTA antennas.
Outputs:
HDMI, Optical D audio, L & R audio, component video, composite video, S-video, modulated video/audio.

voila.
send me one and I'll figure it out

Not clear on this post. These boxes are not the TiVo HD boxes this thread is about, these are the DirecTV boxes with TiVo.

But they are HD.
so its relevant IMHO.
ultimately all I want is a box that replaces the classic VCR but for HD.
If it runs Linux all the better because In that case I can add more HD space.
Even if its a PC thats fine, they only trouble is the HD input.

I forgot to mention the hr10-250 has an Ethernet port. I understand it's possible to hack the unit to move the HD files to your pc although I never had any desire to try that. Are you interested in OTA, satellite, or cable as a source? I was just presenting one option. These units can be had for very cheap. They come with 250GB drives.

ideally DVI or HDMI as an input. but I guess we are not getting that. So using the OTA input seems to be the best option.
be fun to play with.

I misunderstood since I'm not even sure how you would convert to OTA and record in high quality.
The only thing that replaces the VCR is an HDMI capture card, the gefen I linked you to, or a D-VHS machine. Those are really your options--but hey, what the hell do I know.

I'm not sure either.
But I'm a think outside of the box kind of guy.
Since there is nothing really. Lets try to think of way to do it.
