I have read and tried but have not been able to access the service man mode on this pj. As soon as I touch the test button the message Not Applicable appears. I have pressed it five times, held for a long time and nothing i do seems to get " would you like to enter service mode?" The only reference i can find to the 1252 says to use the remote commander (I dont have). The press and hold comes from a 1272 manual. I have three PJs and they all are doing the same or should i say not doing. Is it possible this access has been locked?? What should i be doing??

You should have to press and hold the test button down for 5 seconds(or so). You don't need the remote to do it. It will say not applicable, and eventually it will disappear and give the option to enter service man mode.
