I've been reading this forum for a couple of months now and thanks to you guys dusted off my old sony and did a glycol wash through on the red tube ! I'm pleased with it but am now looking to upgrade to a data grade projector and am looking at a couple on ebay right now - an electrohome 4100 and a barco 800.
Question is, all things being equal, am I going to see a sharper picture with any of these as one of them shares the same tubes as my current sony and both are still only ES sets ?
And from personal experience which one would provide the best picture assuming they were both setup equally well ?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome,
I'm not sure if the picture will be any sharper but you will get better badwidth upgrading to either of these machines. Between these two sets I would go with the Barco as it has filtered glycol (assuming tubes are good in both)
Personally I would look for an 8" EM, they are cheap enough now and will be worlds above an ES set.

Where are you located? If you're close to a metro area, you can probably do better than ebay.
Practically anything newer/data grade is going to be superior to your VPH1000, since the 1000 is a 480i set. With the ECP or 800, you'll be able to run with an HD source like Blu-ray or HD DVD (or HTPC). Sony 12xx are also very inexpensive sets to get into something HD capable.
Like Erik said, go for something color-filtered. I wouldn't worry too much about jumping to an 8" EM set, though unless you don't mind spending some money. Even though they've gotten cheaper, a decent 8" EM machine is still going to be at least a grand (unless you find a steal). On the other hand, a decent starter ES set like a Barco 800 or Sony 12xx will be a huge upgrade for you and can be had for $200-300 - or less. Compared to your 1000, you get a digital chassis, HD compatibility, brighter tubes, more modern design. The only down side is practically anything newer is going to be bigger, heaver, and louder than your little old Sony.
