There was an interesting observation made in the latest Home Theater within the latest flat panel shootout. In it, they compared a number of 1080p flat panels and threw in the better (but same priced) Pioneer Elite at 768p. Of course, they were sitting far enough away that resolution differences could not be seen.
The Pioneer won? Why? On/off CR. The statement was made that in every single shootout they do, the display with the highest on/off CR always wins (kind of makes you wonder why they bother with shootouts  ). Just thought it was interesting to see published what we in this crowd have always said.

Its interesting in the social condition that people buy into resolution and do not know how to benefit from it. Yeah, they'll wait and they'll pay more for no benefit to their ignorant a$se$.
And of course, we can no doubt have seen cases where 15,000:1 CR are advertised and look worse than a competitor advertising half the CR. But, ignorant consumers will be what they are.

I've got the Pioneer 60" 1080p Kuro panel, has even more on/off CR than the 768p, best flat panel I've seen, awesome seductive picture. Sometimes I watch it and think, damn, that's nice, maybe the sharpness and punch is enough of a leap forward to sacrifice perfect blacks, but then I switch on the blend and laugh.

While I agree that on/off is important, I think I could live with 20k to 1.
Gino,
I believe flat panels are the future. Over the next couple of years you could see some flat panels that beat your blend in everything but size. Brightside was bought by Dolby, so it will be interesting to see what they do with the technology. Everyone who ever saw the Brightside displays says it was the best image they have seen.

I have no doubt about flat panels being able to produce the finest PQ. Did you see what Pioneer was able to acheive with their Kuro prototype? True black. ie. infinite on/off CR!
They are also reaching 150" sizes too. But, I imagine this premium PQ and size will have a premium price tag to match.

Looks like dolby is trying to develop the same HDR tech for front projection too

I don't see flat panels taking over theaters. Living rooms yes. But you are not going to do CIH with a flat panel, and they don't have quite the "magical" experience of projectors. So, I think they will really dominate the living room and kind of kill off RPTV, but I don't think PJs are going anywhere.

Well, you may be correct. I wonder how many people actually have dedicated theaters. People like Art, etc who make the investment in a nice dedicated theater will probably have to stick with pjs, but I wonder if some that have put just a little money in their dedicated theater will dismantle it for a living room theater.
