There are some P16 tubes for sale and since mine in my 1208 with 12000 hrs are toast, is this a good idea and will I encounter any problems as I am a noob to the wonderful world of crt. I have two other 1208 for parts that have fried tubes also, one has a bad power supply and the other only powers up on standby, not sure why yet. Are either one of these tubes LC? Thanks guys

If you can get a good set of P16's buy those. A bit smaller beam spot size then the 180DVB22. The 1208 is very worthy of retubeing but make sure you can test the used P16's with a good CRT tester or install them right away if you buy them used to make sure they work properly. The phosphor might look great but the heater might be low in output or the tube might be shorted... Crying or Very sad

Okay have P16 tubes with LC housings and do I pull the LC housing off and mount the housing from my 180 burnt tubes and be done with or is it worth it to adapt them into my 1208 with the LC housings? I also have have only one wire terminal hookup on the P16s and two connections on the old 180s. Do I just change the neck parts over to the new tubes? thanks

If you are up to the challenge I would use the LC housings and convert the 1208 to a LC machine.

I think you will also need to mod the neckboards to use the p16 tubes.

The neck boards appear to hook right up.

The neck board mods are not a matter of fit but where the pins are connected, some tubes have different pin layouts.

P 16tubes are High Resolution and will work perfectly in a 1208 with 180DVB.

Infact the quality difference is amazing. The P16 tube has a much smaller spot size and you can see a very clear picture at 1080p

The 180DVB 1080p picture is not very good its quite soft.

That being said the P16 tube is quite rare and they now cost as much as a high rez 9 inch tube $1000+

However a P16 1208 can out peform a low rez 1209 9 inch set.

The 1208 also has wonderful neck cards superior to the 1209s and 1208s projectors.

IF you put a high rez p16 in a 1208 or 1209 the projector really peforms. If you do some mods in the back end it will be a Cine9 or 909 competitor.

So if you find a set cheap grab it!

Thanks guys, I have the tubes and PJ so now I just have to do it. I still need lenses to fit the P16s and build new mounts for the tubes. Is there a link for info for the back mods? I have three 1208's so I can experiment a little.

I'll second this after seeing it first hand.

Again, I'll second this.

To answer some questions I was sent via email

- Port 3 on every projector from a 800 to a cine 9 is the same. Minor changes do not affect picture quality. That being said don't use port 3 on S models or Cine Models you will have a much lower BW

- Port 3 on Non S older units some though had a minor improvement but the ring was all over the place with excessive peaking circurts.

- The switcher card on all projectors is different this affects picture quality ! Not the port 3 card.

remember port 3 plugs into the switcher card.

- Neck cards on 12xx chassis are far superior to S models however the tube quality was not and the back end on 12xx chassis was quite poor.

If you upgrade your tubes on a 12xx chassis, do the back end modifications your picture will be sharper than a 909.

As for convergance settings the 12xxS models and espically the Cine are easier to align. However with a careful hand and some upgrade to a converg on green board you can make a 12xx just as easy to algin. I aligned a 1209 the other day without a converg on green and had almost all the settings close to 50% and the picture geom was perfect. That being said I was luckey as I did the base mechninal alligment good but sometimes you just get luckey with the way the yoaks and tubes are made.

I have new P16s in my Data 808s and the difference as Greg and Person99 state nothing short of amazing compared to the 180DVBs. I would not have an 8" Barco that did not have those. I think they are the single best upgrade that an 8" Barco owner can do (if their projector didn't come with them). As Greg says they are pretty rare these days. There were a bunch that went cheap on GL a few years back (were for Ampro Retros) and that is where mine came from. It was the best $150 I ever spent, at least on my Barco 8) .
