Anyone using this player that can tell me the quality of SD up conversion? From the reviews I have been reading they look good but one said it wasn't up to snuff for SD. May have been a HD-DVD fan because he didn't own one. Are you happy with the player? Thanks, Doug

Will not be running 1080P but HDMI 1080I-720P.

Hi Doug,

I have been using this player for a couple of months. The SD upconversion is super. In fact it looks as good as a Blu-ray disk to me. I have been running mine at 1080i. How good the SD upconverion is seems to depend more on the quality of the disk than anything else. Some dvds are awesome, and some not so.

Thanks Roger. I ran a SD superbit version of 'The Fifth Element' and it sure looked nice. To bad they don't do all of them like that. Doug

Roger, upconverted SD and HD should be like night and day if you have a HD display! I don't care how good the upconversion is! What's your display device?

MYoung,
My comments were more towards 'a' players ability of doing 'good' SD upconversion. The players seem to be better at this now offering a one player solution. Some are just better at it then others. That and the actual media transfer. Doug

MYoung,

I just upgraded from an NEC 9pg to a Marquee 9500LC. On either machine, HD material is not very different from upconverted SD unless the SD disk is poorly done. I hope others will weigh in on this, hate to think I am missing out on a night and day difference.

Blu-ray or HD DVD > hdmi switcher > HDFury > signal amplifier (1080p) > RG6 cables to projector.

I recently added 5volts of power to the HDFury via USB cable from computer (actually haven't seen a Blu-ray disc since then), the hdmi switcher has been taken out of the chain as a test, makes no difference.

See the attached image for the difference between 1080p and 480p upscaled to 1080p. The source image is CGI so the difference will likely be a little greater than if it was non-CGI content shot with a physical camera. However, I think you still get the idea. It should be a night and day difference if you are truly resolving 1080p.

Thanks for posting the pictures, I see the difference. Currently I am only using 1080i, before adding power to my HDFury, 1080p was not possible. I tried 1080p yesterday on an SD dvd and it didn't look as good as 1080i, but have not tried a Blu-ray disc at 1080p. Do you think the difference between 1080i and 1080p is huge?

The difference between 1080i and 1080p is just as significant as the difference between 480i and 480p. Screen size, refresh rate, and the specific display device's ability are important factors in seeing the difference in practice.

What your eyeball is actually seeing on your screen and in the real world is fine. Basically was wanting to know about the SD upconversion quality of this player. Thanks, Doug

What ever disc that is and frame maybe Cliff can run it real time and give you a better idea of what it looks like at 1080P on a 9" projector.

Another question for owners of this player:

Using HDMI out in the video settings where you can select normal, soft, cinema and 'user' are you able to change the brightness, contrast and gamma?

The manual shows this in the 'user assigned mode' but not sure if this is allowed using HDMI out or not. Thanks, Doug

HDMI out is all I use. In User mode you can adjust all the setting you mention and more. The gamma only has a range of 5 as I recall, but it does make a difference. I have access these players and others on a wholesale level, if anyone is interested let me know. I would need to make a small profit since it would have to go through the business books, but it might be cheaper than retail.

I would say this is true. So, for film-based content, the difference the respective i and p are pretty insignificant. Your post makes it sound like you think they are significant and I struggle to see why unless the device is inappropriately applying vertical filtering to film based content when delivering an "i" signal.

Well, not to create a tangent to the PS3 discussion ...

I finally managed to get an Ethernet/Internet firmware update for the Samsung BD-P1400 player, but it made zero difference. I will be returning it to Costco for a full refund (after only four months of ownership) and come June will be picking up a 80GB PS3. I do not necessarily need the 80GB (40 would have been fine), but I want the flash-media slots.

Doug, you need to check out the Secrets of hifi test results on this player.
They explain it down to the chips used in each player pro/cons.
excellent information
According to their tests, the older BD10 was far superior on SD than this newer player. The BD30 was excellent on Blu Ray and audio but not SD
I'm in the same boat... want excellent SD and HD in one player.. alas

Regards
David

Have a few installed now and not unhappy with SD at all. I like the user settings but looking to see what the 50k does. What looks good to you short of bolting a Oppo 983 to it? Doug

I've yet to try SD on the unit since I'm very pleased with the Oppo 981/SDI for that & it really doesn't take up much space. BD30 Blu-ray & Hi-rez audio performance is outstanding. I'll check out and compare SD performance between the two and report back. I'll try and get some screenshots with compact dig/cam. Will be making the film to digital transition on the SLR front later this month, so it might be a few weeks if the compact's photos are too crappy.
