I own an NEC GP-5000. My video sources are std DVD to extron line doubler (w/ gamma correction), directv to extron line doubler and I also have a Samsung SIR-T451 HD tuner.
I consider this thing to be a trainer to learn with until I can afford a nicer unit (don't have much $ into it). I guess my question is what should my expectations for this thing be (yes I know its very dim-gamma correction helps a lot), picture quality is my concern. There are times when I am really wowed by the picture but then suddenly its not so good. Example: a football game when there is a closeup with no motion looks really good, but then action starts, with lots of motion and detail and the picture looks poor. My technical knowledge is not that great, any help on how to improve picture quality would be appreciated. Is my problem too low quality signal, bad setup, or just a sub-par projector? thanks.

Welcome,

How is the HD tuner connected to the NEC?

What exactly is a GP-5000? Curt describes it as a 9" machine, is it the predecessor to the 10pg.

Are you just inputing line doubling (480P) into this projector? If that is the case, that is the first issue. 1080i and 720p will look much better. A proper mechanical and electronic setup is also vital. Once properly setup, it should through a good picture.

The scan rate determines how quickly the PJ draws each frame onto the screen. The higher the rate, the less you will get motion blur. As you get into higher resolution images, the scan rate generally increases. To get the best image, I would run from an HTPC, so that you can manually adjust these settings to maximize performane. Using the type of setup you have is the most hassle free way to do it, but gives you very little control over the image produced. An HD tuner can be added to a computer for a fairly low cost, and you can download Powerstrip for free to make adjustments. However, the higher your horizontal scan and vertical refresh rates, the faster your tubes will burn, as this causes your PJ to draw the image a greater number of times per second.

It's Nec's first 9" LC CRT PJ.

Very dim, no small beam spot size.

Apart from LC the NEC 6 PG and up are better (higher resolution and brighter) PJs.

I posted this in another GP5000 thread last week.

And this post was 2 days ago:

It's a GP-3000. 8" AC EMF. Not as sharp as the PG series though. Excellent convergence system. Point convergence is standard, and you can basically use as much of it as you like, it won't cause convergence instability.

Caveat:
Stay away from it unless it is in known good working condition and comes with the Service Remote (User remote could be modified to work too if that's all you can get)

The LVPS has an IC in it that can fail, and cannot be replaced or repaired.

If its working, RoBro can modify the PSU to permanently prevent that failure.

Tube condition is typically excellent on these PJs as the tubes aren't driven hard.

Are you sure the HD-6 lenses are really color filtered? IIRC the PJ came with HD-6C ML lenses (multilayer coated color corrected lenses, but not filtered).

If the remotes are included you can maybe sell them for a few $$, lenses too. Most valuable part: probably the ceiling mount, if it's part of the package.

Of course, if the PJ works and when set up properly it does throw a nice pic.
720p and 1080i60 for 16x9, or 1024x768 for 4x3

The GP3000 is the 8" AC version of the GP5000.
While the GP5000 accepts higher scanrates, its only real benefit over the GP3000 is the LC coupling and slightly better resolving capabilities.
It should have standard HD-10 lenses, and it is huge and heavy.
Anything else should be the same (incl. the problematic LVPS - it's not interchangable with the GP3000 LVPS, but has the same irreplacable part in it that tends to fail).

I can say for sure the vast majority of the image quality problems you are having are projector/doubler related. The GP5000 is simply too dim for HT use, also, Extron makes the WORST doublers possible. I have personally tried about 20 different doublers from all major companies, and Extron's were, without question, the worst. Even the ultra cheapo TVOne(I think that was the brand, its hard to remember...) doublers from a few years ago were far better than ANY Extron I've owned...
Don't try to make the GP5000 into something its not, start shopping for that replacement now, and stop worrying about your current learner setup, I'm sure you're getting the most out of it that you can...
