I have a Gretag Esprit 1500 (mfg date 1990). Its basically an Ampro 2000 with some minor differences- 7" LC tubes, analog registration. I have the projector ceiling mounted. The problem: I am unable to vertically align the red and blue tubes with the green. the green is higher than the others. It is so far out of alignment that the electrical adjustments, even at max, can't make up the difference.

Mechanically, I can aim the red and blue left or right, but there seems to be no vertical adjustments. The ampro 2000 operation manual ( posted here http://www.curtpalme.com/docs/Ampro2000_Service.pdf ) mentions some codes - 40 - red vertical shift ( static), 41 blue vertical shift (static) that should function when the registration is off. These codes are not recognized by my projector. Is there a master electronic vertical adjustment for the tubes?

Up till now, I have been faking it by playing with the lens adjustment screws. These screws are really intended for adjusting off plane focus, not positioning. The result of my current technique is a green image that is focused at the top and blury at the bottom. When I look at the images on the raster, I could swear the the green image is higher than the others...
I attached graphic to represent what I am talking about. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading my post!

There is, but this set is so old, I can't remember. Can you post a pix of your remote?

Don't know, but there may be centering magnets... If so, zero out all the electronic and electrical adjustment and center the cross hairs on the tube faces, align the horizontal by aiming the tubes, align vertical with the magnets again, and use the electronics for just the barest tweakery.

If you put a pic up instead of the test pattern, which is more centered in its raster, green or blue/red. Also what does your remote read when you try a code 40 or 41?

Also refer to page 7-14 in the Ampro 2000 user manual. There is shift adj for green also, but determine first which rasters are not centered.

Are there pots on the back of the set like the 4000?

That is the Technician remote and is more difficult to use for setup then the wired remote. It is still possible but some functions may not be accessible. According to the manual if you push the red/blue button, the arrows should adjust shift. Is it shifting in any position? You can also try going through setup useing the help option which may give you more options. If all fails you may need the wired remote or PC control with Ampro software.

No, that is the old service remote, everything can be done through it. I'll look to see if I have any literature left on that set, it's been a few years since I worked on one.

The 1500 is much closer to the 300/500/535 models than the 2000. There is user and service manual for Esprit 300/500 in the Setup Tips & Manuals section that might be helpful. R40 on the vertical bd is master vertical position, but it is best to center it and use the centering rings to position the picture on the CRT faces.

Hey Scott. But the remote for the 300/500 doesn't look like his, but the 2000 remote does.

The Ampro IR remote looked similar but was different. IIRC that was the 300/500/535/1500 remote control. It connected to the projector with a telephone type cable. On those model projectors the LCD display was on the registration bd and was visible on the top cover. These units were before Spellman.

"These units were before Spellman."
I'm wrong about that. The Spellman was a new feature of the 1500.

Brown- I've got a bunch of parts that I'm giving away for the price of shipping for those older analog sets... Let me know!

Thanks for the tip tse and thank you to every one who responded.

My solution:
I reread the Esprit 300/500 Operation Manual (http://www.curtpalme.com/docs/Esprit_300_500_User.pdf). Section 7.11 deals with centering the image using the centering rings. I followed that procedure and its seems to have done the trick. I thought that the rings on the end of the neck where only for astig. adjusments ( that is what I took away from the 2000 service manual, appendix A2 p.2 manual).

This is a lot of fun and all but it would sure be nice to own a well documented set... with 8" tubes, digital conversion and em focus.

Evidently there were two model 1500 projectors. The first was Esprit 1500 which I believe is the one we are discussing. Later, Ampro made a model 1500 which was based on the 2000.

Does your projector have the registration bd with gazillions of pots and the LCD readout? If so, that would be a very rare set. Not many of those were made.

Thats my projector! It even came with a little tiny screw driver for adjusting the pots on the registration board. Aligning it is a lot of fun. Its mounted on the ceiling so my arms get tired from turning all the pots!

I have it running off my HTPC at 1280x720. It looks great now that I have it aligned properly.

Man, that set brings back memories! I had the older video only unit. It was my first 'high end' projector, over the zillions of Zeniths that I installed. I got 4 of them out of a local strip bar that spent $12K PER PROJECTOR and STEWART SCREEN, tensioned and electic.

I remember walking into the place when I heard they got them (and didn't buy from me, the ratbastards!). My jaw dropped when I saw the image that those SD 187 tubes could throw in a pitch black room (more or less).

Funny thing is back then (1990?), all of the bars here were smoking, and those Ampros didn't like the nicotine a bit. THey worked for about 6 months, then one after the other died. The seller babied them for about 3 years, retubed one at least once, the bar owner spent stupid amounts of money on them, but at the time they were the best image in town.

I finally bought the yellowed nicotined screens and projectors at $500 per set, kept the best one, retubed one other one and sold it and actually made money on them. The other two are still here in parts..Smile
