I can't seem to find the answer to this anywhere, even on this 'most excellent of CRT sites. When setting up the raster, Do I center it and make it as big as I can, or do I bleed it over the edges enough to center and size my internally generated test patterns correctly. It is not possible to do both.

Personal choice on what you want, on some models with thinner glass envelopes on the tubes it can be a problem. Internal test patterns are also 10% overscanned so they are larger then the actual image. If your running a expanded raster and shortening optical throw for more phosphor use then it has some risks if your using memory or if a V drive has problems. The lower freq signals like video are quite a bit larger then say 720P and 1080I is a larger active area also. Check what it does if you run no signal or use the warm up screen all white.
Porch settings of signals also need some thought. Doug

Thanks for the replies. Yes it is the G70.
If I center the raster, the test patterns are too small to be very useful. Could I center the internal patterns, then bring up my 16:9 image and center and size that on the tube face? Could I then superimpose a pattern and expand the raster size until the test pattern is as wide as the 16:9 image area? There should still be some room to size the pattern vertically beyond the top and bottom of the image. (PJ is squared and centered to the screen.

Center the test pattern on the tube for a G70. There isn't a user adjustment for centering the raster independent of the video like other PJ's.

Doug,
I can change the porch settings for the image within the raster with my scaler, but I don't know how to move the internally generated patterns within the raster. I am assuming the only way to move the pattern on the tube face is to move the raster.
Regards
Willie

I'm not familiar with the G70 controls, strictly NEC but was giving general answer. Hate to give the wrong info on this. Doug

It's completely different Doug, and coming from a NEC, the G70 is completely baffling - it's missing the most fundamental of NEC controls (Phase, which is not the same as picture shift, which is what Phase is on a Marquee and maybe a Barco).
We also struggled with centering the test pattern/image/raster on a G70. I think the answer is to let the raster go where it will, but I never understood the G70 system.

Do the internal test patterns matter to you? I always setup with external source patterns

Thanks for the responses. The internal patterns matter for things like EM focus and zone point convergence. External patterns are fine for most other things, although when you call up most service mode items, you get an internal pattern.
Discovered this when the contrast was minimized and G2s up enough to show the raster when there is no input. I had to shrink it quite a bit to get it all on the tube face. I put a signal in and it was the same size as it was before I downsized the raster. WTF?? Did a little experimenting w/raster size (press pattern & you can keep signal running) and when I flipped back to image, size was unchanged. Inputting a signal seems to cause the raster to resize itself to the image. On the PJ remote, RGB SIZE & SHIFT (top, center) seem to be image only controls and the bottom row SIZE & CENT are the pattern/raster controls. I'll try resetting the G2s to norm, size and center the patterns and see what happens.
will report tomorrow as it's getting late here (after midnight) and I have to be at work for 8.
Thanks again, you guys are awesome
- W

The initially registration/convergence you setup with the internal patterns and internal oscillator (starting at P2). Think of setting up the patterns on a G70 like centering the raster on other PJ's.

Same here, to fine tune the source(s). I notice perfect convergence of the test patterns does not mean the same for the video image.
