Hi all,

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year (PC version Happy Holidays).

I just got my 8111+ mounted and took a few pics of how I mounted it and a couple of screen shots. This was just a quick tune up and still needs lots of work. I some how did not get the Screen square to the center line of the room. This is throwing off the right side focus and all the geometry. The screen shots are of a SD DVD upscaled to 1080i by my PS3. And yes there is a seam across the middle of the screen, but it was free. There are some good pics of how I mounted it. I used turnbuckles on the threaded rod to give me simple adjustments. You can also see how tight the working conditions were in the attic.

Still lots of work left, but at least the family and I can start enjoying it now.

Looks great 9kids. Thumbs Up

I got a PS3 and an HDFurry gamer edition for Christmas and can't believe the pq with SD-DVD.

Looks like you still have enough room for an 8111 stack?

Thanks tri_joel

I am pretty happy with the whole setup. I have thought a lot about a 8111 stack, and yes there is room and I have the second 8111, but I think I need to learn to master one first, then I will think about a stack.

Looks good,

The one thing I would change would be the power cable to the projector. Extension cords running above the ceiling is a definite code violation. Run to a box right over the projector or punch a hole and put an outlet in the ceiling.

Yeah, that's still on the to do list. I want to put in a switched outlet in the attic, with the switch in the den, so I don't have to leave it in standby all of the time. Right now I have to run out to the garage to unplug the extension cord. I may even rewire the outlet the equipment rack is pluged into to the same breaker to help avoid ground loop issues.

Wow. The picture looks nice.

BTW: Anyone having the Blu-Ray version of The Simpsons Movie? Would really like to see some pictures of it as there should be much more sharpness in it.

Good Idea to put it on a switch, I ran my Marquee that way when I had mine. I used a key switch and would recommend this as it keeps people from flipping the wrong switch and killing power in the middle of a movie. Supposedly it is Ok to kill power like this but when it happened on mine geometry setting would be inverted when the projector started back up.

Beat me to the extension cord thing. Laughing

As great as the pic is, what's most amazing to me is that you crawled all over that tiny attic area to get different angle pix! I HATE fiberglass. <shudder> I live in a ranch and my 'attic' is about the same. Marine Corp crawl to get anywhere except I have blown in insulation. Dusty as my ex wifes Thanksgiving turkey up there. Mr. Green

If I may make a suggestion, when you pull a line for an outlet to the attic near the pj, substitute a standard receptacle with an RF controlled high wattage one from X10.com. Then you can control the outlet from anywhere within 100ft. They sell alot of their stuff in bundles so you may get more than one outlet with a remote to control them all with. (frequencies for each can be user selected). Pricing is very very attractive and it's easy enough to find other outlets you'd like to control.

If you want you can buy black foam pipe insulation to bundle all your cables from the ceiling to the pj. Get it large enough and it'll even fill in the ceiling penetration so you aren't losing heat. You can get it in smaller diameters too to cover the AllThread. It's pre-split and easy to install. Again, an extremely inexpensive but visually pleasing add.

Great looking pic! ("He's no longer known as Spiderpig! He's now Harry Plopper") Laughing
I really need to start all over with my 8500 and apply what I know now that I didn't know when I set it up. I've just been....enjoying it. Thumbs Up

Greg

I still have a few more things to do in the attic so I had let some tools up there. Of course since I left them up there I needed them to put together Christmas toys. So I decided to take the camera up when I went to get the tools. The first shot was as far as my left arm would reach and the second shot is as far as my right arm would reach (blind shots but they came out OK), the last shot is on the way out. The attic made running the cables and mounting the projector a lot cleaner, but working up there was a nightmare. Since the den ceiling is sloped too, I could only work laying on my stomach, head down, feet up, blood rushing to my head. I could only work about a 1/2 hour at a time before I would start to feel sick. At least this was a good time of year to do it, not to hot up there. So I could wear long sleeves and a sweat shirt and that helped keep the insulation itch down. Having to cut small wedges to go under the strut in the attic, to get it level, predrilling to keep from splitting the wedges and driving lag bolts, was all time consuming and not fun, but I am happy the way it came out. I am planning a hush box more for looks than sound, but it is way down on the to do list, so the idea about the pipe insulation is great for the short term.

If you want to eliminate the extension cord here's a parts list for Partexpress.com for a 25' power code

110-432 Wattgate 320i-BLK IEC Connector Black $17.29 (on sale)
110-440 Wattgate 5266i-BLK Edison Connector Black $10.28 (on sale)
110-431 Wattgate 15 RA Right Angle Adapter Black $9.87 (converts the 320i to a right angle plug)
100-574 Carol 14 AWG 3C SJOOW Power Cable 25 ft $26.1

I just noticed they have an AR IEC power cord, 20 ft with ferrite cores for ~$60 on sale.

Of cource, neither of these would be to code either.

Your mounting inside the attic looks just like mine. I was not so smart and decided to do mine in the heat of summer. We almost died up there but it was nice to get it done. I'm glad you are enjoying your setup. Like most of us, I'm sure you will never be satisfied and will continue to tweak!

Thanks everyone for your replies and comments. I was surprised that you all picked up on the extension cord, and want to assure everyone this will be resolved soon. Since I have an attic above, an unfinished basement below, and the garage is on the other side of the right side tall wall, it is pretty easy to run cable and I will be adding a dedicated outlet in the attic soon. I am also surprised that no one commented on the turnbuckles I used in the threaded rod. I thought this was a great idea and has worked great. The turnbuckles themselves are easy to find (Home Depot, Lowes, ACE), the left handed bolts and nuts were a little more difficult to find. I found them at a small old hardware store, but I am sure you could order them on the web.

Thanks again
