I just purchased the LG LDA-831 for my father for Christmas and it has the HDMI output along with Digital Coax and Optical which most other Upscaling 1080i/p players do not, they either have one or the other or pass all sound through the HDMI port.

Right now we only have it working on the S-Video port. The HDMI is connected to a HDMI to DVI converter then to a DVI to VGA converter but the Electrohome 4501 won't pick up a signal. I guess I'm left wondering do I have to buy something like the HD Fury HDMI to VGA.

Anyway, I want to put this out there for anyone who has tried such an arrangement and manged to get it working before. Personally I'd just build a HTPC and deal with the upkeep for the sake of flexibility.

Should I try another DVD player eg. Sony DVPNS78H, Pioneer DV-400V, etc. vs. what I have? I don't even think the LG allows color management which really bites as that was one thing his Citizen w/VGA output progressive scan player had but wasn't allowing enough adjustments to fine tune the image.

Suggestions, comments, what to buy next let me know....

If these are the simple $2 adapters then yes, they don't work. What in the chain do you think should actually be converting the digital signal to an analog signal?

Yes, you need to buy one of these.

Very few players output RGBHV. So, you are either going to need to get one of the few upscaling over component players and transcode that, or use an HDMI upscaling player and transcode that. Personally, I would choose the second.

Thanks Dave!

Yeah, he's using the HDMI to DVI and DVI to VGA adapters for like $6 each. It just seemed it would swap the pin configuration and match up the cables, digital or not but yeah, makes sense. Guess my Christmas gift just got a lot more expensive - if he hasn't already I'll suggest the HD Fury, it was only a matter of time before we're forced to upgrade. I'm building a HTPC, I just find the colors are better on my 4500 than on his 4501 with what looks like, based on tube condition, to have the same number of hours or close on. I'm running a slow system 677mhz with the RealMagic DVD card AnalogRocks - big kudos goes out to him, wouldn't have worked otherwise!

What is the difference between VGA and UXGA? I have a VGA input on my laptop and projector. But can I by a UXGA cable instead of a VGA cable. I know UXGA gives a higher resolution picture than VGA.

Nothing and everything. Depends on who is using the term and what the application is. For isntance, in a laptop, for the internal connections, you need the exact cable specified. For an external connection, you need a cable rated at the resolution and refresh rate you desire over the length of the cable. VGA is often used as a generic term for all _VGA type output... VGA, SVGA, XGA, UXGA, WXGA and so on.

Technically, almost nothing uses VGA anymore. The proper terms would be SVGA (to be more inclusive) or the specific term such as WXGA, UXGA, etc.

Here's a listing of the XGA specs:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UXGA

Thus, basically, for UXGA you need a VGA cable that supports 1600 × 1200 resolution (or the appropriate data bandwidth). or for the others, look at the chart. A "cheapo" or ancient generic VGA cable may not be able to handle that - or it may. I've got some very very old IBM cables that will.

BTW, WUXGA is the UXGA spec that supports widescreen UXGA - or 1080p.

And of course, the better the quality of the cable, the better off you will be. But point is, just because it says VGA doesnt mean it wont work or isnt suited. Nowadays, it's kinda like saying "car" as opposed to "Lamborghini" - a car may - or may not - be a Lamborghini.
