Anyone here done a stack with two 1272's? I'm interested in how they ceiling mounted, what kind of input devices, etc...
Seems to me the PJ's should be mounted top to top, with the lower one right side up and the upper one upside down so the lenses are closest to each other and nearly perpendicular to the screen.

You're right about the over/under config being the preferred config. They wouldn't have to be right next to each other, though. You can also do a floor/ceiling config, with each using about the same amount of keystone, assuming the offsets are about the same. Or, you could have one on the ceiling, and one close to the center... keep reading.
I'm going to do a 1271/1272 stack... just for fun, though. The old girls aren't that sharp to begin with, and putting two of them together isn't going to help matters any.
In my case, I already have the 1271 ceiling mounted. I'm going to put a 1272 on a stand right behind and just above my head between my two rows. It will be directly underneath the 1271 - pretty close to on-axis with the center of the screen. I just thought it would be fun to do before I sell one of the machines - just to say I did it and see how it looks. Should be pretty bright - that's for sure.
At nearly 1400 watts and close to 4500 BTU/hour heat dissipation - and considering that the end result won't be that great compared to a single machine or compared to better machines (though admittedly bright) - I don't see it as a long-term solution, but more as something fun to play with for a weekend or two just to see it and say I did it.

I hadn't thought about the extra power consumption, heat, noise, etc... I would also have mount the bottom one lower than it is already, and my taller friends are having to duck under it now. Maybe this is a waste of time and effort.

That's actually a fear I have of even playing around with a stack. Of course, an 8500 is a much newer, better machine than a Sony 12xx. Sharper, more stable...
I'm interested in your comment about better shadow detail, though. To what do you attribute that improvement?
