Greetings,

Although I have setup my 8500 before, I want to make sure I am setting it up properly, i.e maximizing my raster usage and I have a few questions for ya.

I will be using a 16x9 screen size of 95x53 or 109diag.

I will have two sources, a 480p connection from my dvd player via component and moome card.
720p from directv hd pvr and component cables into moome card.

I will want to setup two different memories for the two devices as well.

SO here is the question, I have read over how to maximize the image size and raster on the face of the tubes. Instead of measuring and or using the marquee distance calculator my under standing is to maximize the image on the face of the tubes and then move the projector back and or forward until it then fills the width of the screen.

The question is, should I first wipe all settings on the Marquee?

What method should I use to fill the tube face, internal test pattern, external test pattern from dvd player, or 720p DirecTV.

I would like to do this in steps, so I will continue to ask more questions as I get through each setup procedure.

Your guidance and help is greatly appreciated.

P.S. THis is a Marquee that has been looked over and modded for the 16x9 and the heater voltage correction etc, so I am ready to go on that front.

Welcome to the Forum,

If the marquee is already set up for those two sources I see no reason why you should reset the machine, just make sure that the image is already setup correctly.

However if you haven't set it up for these sources I would reset it before I would begin the setup.

Btw. 480p is a little low to be feeding into an 8500, you should considor getting a HD-DVD player, an upscaling DVD player or a scaler. Personally I would go with a HD-DVD player as it will allow you to play HD-DVD's and may not cost much more than an upscaling player.

Zebu,

Thanks for the input.

What I want to do is a clean fresh setup so I can get the procedures down pat.

I am stuck with the DVD player I have for now.

I currently have the unit setup and throwing an excellent image, however looking into the lenses I can see that I am using less than what is recommened on the tube face, more phosphor means better resolution.

So I want to go through this step by step with a pros guidance. I have read the manuals, in fact I am reading the setup guide again as we speak. But again I want this setup the correct way.

Anyone else care to get me started?

Bump Smile

Anyone care to get me started?

I have all evening to play with this thing.

I have a question in the meantime.

I have a directv HD-DVR and at 720p I can either use letterbox or stretch, stretch fills the screen, letterbox cuts off the top and bottom a bit, does anyone know whether stretch is what I should use for a 16x9 screen?

Thanks in advance.

If you are talking about watching 4:3 material then it is a personal preference which of those you choose. Some people like to leave the aspect ratio original, with gray bars so that tubes wear a bit more evenly. I like stretch sometimes.

But with HD signals the receiver should fill the 16:9 screen automatically, it shouldn't matter what is chosen for the 4:3 signals. Make sure the receiver knows that you are using a 16:9 screen.

Rdean,

Thanks for the reply.

This receiver will only be used for the PJ so I need to tell the box that I am running a 16x9 screen right?

If it is a true HD image, then it should fill the entire screen from top to bottom correct?

Now for DVD's some are WIDESCREEN, is it these that should fill the entire 16x9 screen or is it the anamorph?

The DVD player should be setup for a 16x9 image as well correct?

The reason I ask, is that when I throw a HD image using stretch from my HD-DVR, and then look into the lenses, it is apparant that I am nearly filling the width of the tube face without getting too close to the edges. This is what I am a little unlear of.

Thanks in advance.

Some movie DVDs are 16:9 which would fill your 16:9 screen perfectly but many movies are 2.35:1 or what is referred to as WIDESCREEN on the DVD box. These "widescreen" DVDs should show with (small) black bars above and below the picture. You need to tell the DVD player you have a 16:9 screen as well otherwise the black bars will be too big and people will look short and fat.

Rdean,

Thanks again for setting me on the straight and narrow.

I have had this projector for a few years and am now just getting into setting it up properly.

I had to wrap my head around the whole 16x9 thing before getting started.

All of my content, well 95% will be HD Nature shows, DVD's widescreen and 16x9 and very little 4x3 if at all.

So assuming I have my projector setup properly for 720p, which it is pretty darn close for now, how would I setup for a 480p profile on the Marquee, right now if I switch to 480p the image shifts to the right hand side and needs to be shifted to the left.

Can I then save this setting into a memory location and then assign a channel #, I think the 720p setting is in the first location, it is what the projector defaults to on startup.

Thanks for the help.
