My sister is looking for a way of converting S-VHS tapes to DVD and some have copy protection. She has a DVD+R DL burner installed in her Dell PC running XP with Any DVD installed. Any ideas ?

Canopus ADVC-100. It has an "Unadvertised feature" to circumvent macrovision.
Not that I've ever used it.
Just something I heard once.
Oh yeah, she'll need a firewire port.

I was trying to backup some Beta tapes and some VHS stuff and the ATi craptastic software wouldn't let me do it no way no how.
This little box looks interesting.

Do all the Canapos ADVC-100's have this special feature including the new ones ? Thanks for the advise. 8)

There are no new ADVC-100s. They are now ADVC-300s. No, only the ADVC-100 does this little trick. Basically, this is the procedure . . .
Not that I've ever used it . . .
1. Put all dips OFF (unless you have a PAL system). If PAL I think 5 or 6 is set to on. Check manual.
2. Hook up the firewire cable from the unit to the PC while ensuring that both units are off (this is what the instructions say to do).
3. Turn on the power to the VCR, PC and ADVC-100.
4. Set capture on the PC to Manual.
5. Start the VHS Tape.
6. The ANALOG IN LCD of the unit will light, and if the VHS Tape is Macrovision protected, the red STATUS light will stay on for about 18 seconds, turn off for about three seconds, and then repeat the process.
7. Depress and HOLD the INPUT SELECT silver button. The DIGITAL IN LCD will light up temporarily then turn off. Keep this button depressed until the red STATUS light stays off completely (about 15 seconds).
8. Release the INPUT SELECT BUTTON and press it briefly one more time until the ANALOG IN button lights up.
9. Macrovision is now bypassed. It will stay in this mode until you power it off.

Someone please enlighten me why would someone want to rip VHS quality copy protected content? I would think buying a DVD would present much less of a hassle and better quality from the start. When you take into account the limited pixel resolution, limited color resolution, the AD process, and all that jazz, it seems like someone trying to make a Campbell's soup can into a telephone using just the can and string.

The sis wants to copy old family videos and some older movies never released on DVD.Agreed the quality sucks...

Yes, but you said some was Copy Protected, which is what I was addressing. I would think most run of the mill combo units would do the job for family stuff. Are the family stuff copy protected?

Wow I have one of those but all the chip numbers were ground off. Funny I just found it half an hour ago too.

Right and I bought mine uhhh because uhhhh the Zenith 20" TV I had in the 80's didn't like the macrovision.

I have a ton of S-VHS tapes recorded off laser disk. Many are not found on DVD. A lot are foreign films that were only available on laser disk. A few that come to mind are "The Public eye","The Delicate Sound Of Thunder" NTSC , "A Miracle In Rome" and the x rated version of "Fritz The Cat" 
Remember the Apex DVD player with the secret menu ?
