This sort of reminds me of how DirecTV demands you pay them up-front for the privilege of renting their HD DVR.

This is almost as bad as the Divix players ( the actual format not the CoDec) where you bought the disk for $5 and then had to allow the player to dial up a server so you could watch the movie and be charged EVERY time. There was an overwhelming backlash against it and thus it died.
