I'm new to the community and this is my first post. I have a Barco 808 and intend to purchase an HD Fury to get an HDMI signal to the projector. Should I purchase a drive for the 360 or a standalone HD DVD player? Will the 360 do an adequate job of upscaling standard DVD's? Does the 360 Elite have any special offerings for this use? Does the 360 have an HDMI output? Sorry for all of the quetions. I appreciate your responses.

You can go online to Amazon and buy the Toshiba HD-A3 for $160 delivered (no tax/shipping). This will offer HDMI or Component 1080i/720P video output. If you use the HD DVD add on drive for the 360 you will get 1080i Component or 1080P (or either at 720P) RGBhv unless you also have the HDMI output.
As far as scaling goes one should keep things in perspective in terms of what they have for a display. Not just what display product they have, but the extent in which they have that display setup.

The 360 HD-DVD does an "OK" job of attempting to hand on what the films creators intended but without gamma control, either on the 360 console or the HD drive, I find the blacks are crushed. The HDFury doesn't have any gamma adjustment capabilities. It's an option method to connect otherwise incompatible devices while cleaning up the signal.
AFAIK the Tosh A series HD players don't offer gamma correction either so to get the most out your HD viewing, regardless of which method you choose, requires the addition of a good gamma control addon.
For games on my Marquee 8500 fed 360 I find I have to crank the B&C to 60 on both. But when I watch movies with the HDDVD drive for the 360 I leave B&C nulled...or 50&50. It's not the greatest but it's passable.
Until I can afford to addon gamma control (hopefully with tax return $$) I live with either crushed blacks or B&C cranked to the degree where it almost looks like a...<shudder> digital.
The Elite gives you HDMI connectivity as opposed to the options available for the "regular" 360. eg, Component or VGA. The only reason to go with the Elite is if you have alot of HDMI devices and an HDMI switcher (standalone or built into your receiver). It doesn't do anything else different than the original. The most notable difference is it ships with a 60GB HD as opposed to the puny 20GB the original Premium shipped with.
