Good visible phosphor grain ???
The grain you are seeing is probably related to the tube itself (its phosphor coating), the old Mecs 180DVB/DMB used to have this grainy appearance you described.

I got your point here. Image focus is variable to some extent, otherwise your crispy tube face is always there, like a costant. An irritating one

Ohhh...
I forgot to mention:
P16s (Lc or not), and P19s have smoother surface (I don't have tons of tubes here but I have noticied it clearly on a population of 20 different Mecs, P16, P19 and 180s) which makes your method close to useless. But, this is my experience, a limited one, others may disagree.
