My screen went blank last night for a few seconds. I heard what sounded like a small click when it went black. Then, the picture returned out of focus and way too big. It slowly ramped back down to normal size and focus. This whole episode was a total of about 8-10 seconds. I couldn't get around to the back fast enough to see if there was an error light.

It was fine the rest of the night. No convergence or focus issues that I could see. Everything is normal, like nothing happened.

Do I remember reading that this has something to do with HVPS going bad? Or is it a bad focus module?

Thanks,

C.

It can be an overload on the HV section, causing it to shut down temporarily. Don't worry about if it doesn't happen again.

I've had the problem too with my 8500. It turned out to be nothing more than giving it a good cleaning and reseating the HDM and the FCM. After modifying the craptasticly designed retention system for both those boards I haven't had another problem.
Gravity is a bitch for those two if you have it ceiling mounted. Even if you don't, the white foam EHome installed on the shield cage covers compresses over time, which allows for just enough movement to lose good pin contact when it's inverted. It isn't an issue if floor mounted. It could possibly be the HVPS but hopefully it isn't that.

Thanks guys. I'll keep an eye on it. This is the only hiccup I've experienced since I've had the 'Quee.
Maybe this weekend I can give it a good internal cleaning. I've only had to clean all the chip contacts on the CLM so far.

HV flashover. Probably at an accumulation of dust on the anode caps.

The bad news is, once it happens, it'll probably happen again eventually. It's a problem that gets progressively worse
as every additional flashover reduces the remaining dielectric strength of the insulating silicone in that path.

When the problem gets to be a real annoyance, and to be fair that might not happen in the next year or two, then the
solution is to replace the affected anode lead and cap. Its's not a tough job but does require a fair amount of disassembly.

Did all tubes do the same thing or just one? It can be hard to notice if just one does it but if so it could be a neck board problem.

Try to turn the contrast and brightness to the top for a short while and see if the problem comes up again. If it does and only one tube jumps then try swapping the neck boards and see if the problem follows with the board.

Although I have to admit I would check the hvps and anode leads/caps first.
