Most of today's non-stereo audio-video receivers utilize a digital-domain processing (decoding) which hands off to a DAC for analog handling. Whether one choses to use the integrated analog amplifiers for an amplified signal out the back of the AVR, or the non-amplified analog signal to be sent over a cable to a separate amplifier has got me to thinking.

A couple of years ago I thought about the long-range goals I had in mind for my Paradigm Studio 120's. I knew I wanted to bi-amp them, but that I also wanted to amplify them using a rather short amplified cable. This meant that I would find it necessary to place a two-channel amp at the location of each Studio 120. No big deal, really.

Now I am wondering if anyone makes a two-channel (or multi-channel) amplifier that comes with a built in DAC to accepting a digital pre-out signal as well. While we wonder about performance loss in the form of power over a heavy-gauge wire, I would expect the same proportion of loss on a cable where its a non-amplified signal as well.

Does anyone make a decoding processor that offers digital preouts, and does anyone make an at-driver amplifier that accepts an optical (or digital) audio signal as well?

TV/Projector: Sony G90 X2 - Vidikron Vision 1

Sony STRD9000ES and TADA9000ES has optical "pre"-out - just one IIRC. Bother are circa 2005-2006

IMHO the finest amplifier that Sony has ever made.

They don't even sell the 9 series anymore as they spent so much on R&D they were making a huge loss on each unit. (Or so the rumour goes). Certainly you can't buy them new anymore. A few turn up on the 2nd hand market but are usually very quickly snapped up.

Good luck
