Hi everyone,

I am thinking of running my vista ultimate rig to an xbox 360 elite through the wireless media extender and then to a green hd fury. It seems a little complicated but it is supposed to be rated for 1080 p over a wireless a-g system. and I only have a Sony 1272q so I think I'm supposed to be ok at 720p and 1080i.

Is anyone else running their PJ through this or a similar setup? Vista ultimate has media centre built into it and almost all of my media is on my harddrives. I dont even own an external dvd player (for shame, but I'm on a student budget)I may also get a tv tuner card and do some homestyle PVR recordings down the road.

Do you think I will need a line doubler or scaler? Can my computer do this for me?

Any help is really appreciated.

I am running with
Sony 1272Q
Windoze Vista Ultimate
ATI 1900XTX 512 meg
2 gig high speed ram
CRT monitor (of course)
Intel Quad core 6600

Thanks
Shane

The only thing that the HTPC-360 will be doing is streaming compressed video to the 360. When it get's to the 360 it will uncompress the video. No way traditional home wireless can transport uncompressed video of HD proportions.

BTW, you might also want to place this in the home theater PC forum as well.

My rig is only about 15 feet from my xbox360 & PJ, I could run enhanced cat 5 to it i suppose...would that work, I'd need a router then I think.

CAT5e is rated to 100-meters for Gigabit transport. Since no compressed video is anywhere near that kind of bandwidth you should be good with regular CAT5 up to 100-meters.

Funny, I thought CAT5E was rated up to 350MHz and CAT6 is what you want for Gigabit Ethernet.

hmmm, if they cost nearly them same is there any reason not to use the higher rated cable?

My Roommate wants to use my internet connection as well, should I set up a router and hardwire a connection for his computer too, or let him run off a wireless connection and hard connect to the xbox360...I hate wires Sad actually I hate wires that cannot be hidden away and managed nicely and this old apt means everything will be running along walls and floorboards

I take that back - learned something new. I just took a patch cable out of a Juniper firewall box and it is clearly marked "CAT5E . . . Verified for Gigabit Ethernet".

My bad!!

While Geffen (SP) offers a CAT solution for transmitting uncompressed video, I have to say I am questioning the end results vs the costs involved. Also, considering the poster is only 15' why bother monkeying with CAR and not a good quality VGA cable?

So VGA cable to Xbox360 then out to PJ? I have to check the 360 specs I think it only accepts Ethernet connections as an input

hmmm XBOX site says

"If you choose wireless, we strongly recommend using a dual band 802.11a+g router configured properly to access each band"

but realistically

The Xbox 360 has an Ethernet connection port that you can use to plug your console directly into your network. Wired connections tend to be the best way to network for Media Center Extender scenarios.

So ethernet connection to xbox 360 and now onto outputs

No, I was not suggesting VGA video transport from the PC to the 360, but rather directly to the projector. I am not aware of any means to transport uncompressed video into the 360.

Microsoft is playing it safe. They want you to use their products, or suggest something that would reduce the number of calls to them if you use someone else's product. Compressed MPEG-2 can be up to 30 Mbps. MPEG-2 is a compressed video format. Most broadcast HDTV is in around 19Mbps. I am not sure what the bit rate of the video you are looking to pass through the 360, though.
