Hey, early adopters, we've got something big for ya! Measuring in at about half the size of your average consumer electronics she-waif (that'd be 33-pounds), we bring you the RD-A1 HD DVD recorder set to drop July 14 in Japan. Now, an HD DVD recorder alone is newsworthy being a first and all, but this monster screams for attention with a 1TB disk, TV tuners for Hi-Vision (Japanese hi-def) and terrestrial analog, and good ol' Ethernet for DLNA media streaming around the house. Oh, and for those of you unhappy with the, er, limited 1080i output of Tosh's HD-A1 player, this pup slaps in 1080p capable HDMI from ABT. And if you really need to record more high-def TV than the 92 hours (or 74 days in standard def!) allowed by that massive disk, well, first check your priorities TV-boy then kick back smugly 'cause the RD-A1 records to both HD DVD-R single-layer (15GB) and dual-layer (30GB) discs with support for DVD-RAM/R/RW/R-DL formats to boot. She also packs in all the video and audio jacks you'll likely need in addition to support for Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD codecs. No word on a US release, but if the launch of the HD-A1 was any indicator, we could see this on US shelves just a few weeks after it drops in Japan for ¥398,000 or right around $3,464 in dead presidents. Oh, and if you thought the HD-A1's remote control was cluttered, just check the new remote and more after the break.

That would be a very nice turn key solution if it had ATSC, Clear Quam, and maybe a cable card slot that's not slaved to a particular company.

I do not get it. Its almost $3500. One Terabyte of disk space is like $200. Are we suppose to believe that the HD DVD Writer is that freaking expensive?

Please let me know where I can obtain the above for that price. I store a lot of CCTV video for my work and would love to be able to purchase 1 TB for $200
Thanks

I've had nothing but bad luck with Maxtor mechanisms. My dad and I have had three Maxtor drives fail inside of a couple of years. One wouldn't spin up anymore, another wouldn't read, write or format anymore, and another that wouldn't spin up in an external case literally fried a chip in a flash of light and smoke when I powered it up on an internal power supply. That would be 3 out of 4... all from different batches (i.e., not purchased at the same time).
Now that Seagate bought Maxtor, maybe they'll be Seagate mechanisms instead of Maxtor mechanisms. That would be a good thing, because out of the 8-10 Seagate Barracudas I've purchased over the last 5 years, I had one DOA from Newegg, but none have ever failed after install! Oh boy, I shouldn't have just said that.
I'm not sure about WD Caviars - I've never owned one.

Hi Clarence...
What's being BBQ'd in your avatar? It doesn't look like anything I've ever flamed before.

The last two 500GB drives I bought cost me $99.95 and they were Seagate SATA retail product. Hey, the store was Fry's Electronics. You have to catch their mid-week specials.
Right now Fry's has 500GB SATA300 Western Digital drives for $99.

I just like the fact they have everything you need to record high def and regular def without fussing with the HTPC and add on's etc. Although that's fun too.
Many of you guys seem to enjoy turn key solutions/set top boxs so I thought I would post that.
Now what would it cost to do this with a HTPC in a fancy case?
Could we do it for less than $3500?

Of course. Are we suppose to think there isn't a heft margin of profit in that product?
