|
|
I was wondering what you guys thought. I currently own the Onkyo TX-SR504 but I am looking at getting a more powerful receiver to drive my onix rocket speakers. I only have 5.1 speakers so going from a 7.1 receiver to 5.1 would not be a bad thing to me. I won't be upgrading anytime soon on my speakers to more channels.
The Onkyo is 1 year old, the Denon is 8 years old. I need DTS and DD processing, which both have. The both have enough inputs for me also.
Onkyo TX-SR504
75 wpc - 8 ohm THD < .08%
Denon AVR-3300
105 wpc, into 8 ohms, <.05%THD
I can't see why it would be a bad thing to go to the Denon. I would have more power & less distortion. The only things that I see that I will be losing will be things I don't need like more than 5 speaker outputs/ the decoding that goes along with that, xm, ipod dock capable...
Am I missing something?
Thanks,
Travis

Nevermind, I asked someplace else and was told that there will not be much difference going from 75 watts to 105 watts with 2 good receivers.

1) If you REALLY want more power then start adding outboard amps and using the recievers analog outputs to send a pre-amplified signal to them. the 3300 is OK but if your driving large speakers like the rocket towers wtih multiple drivers both receivers will either clip a channel really badly during loud parts or simply overheat and shut-down. I've had both things happen and it's not fun. i wound up adding a pair of monarchy audio SM-70 pro mono-blocks for my mains and they are fantastic. This leaves the 3300 driving only the center and surrounds and it is turning out to be a really nice arrangement.
3) does your Onkyo have 6 or 8 channel analog inputs? the 3300 has 8 channel in and that's the ONLY way to get dolby True HD from a new HD player the Toshiba HD-XA2. Otherwise, you will need an even newer receiver with HDMI input for Audio since the older ones can't decode 192Kb transfer rates.
