I live in the wonderful state of Georgia (USA) and unlike the state with much more lightning, my state seems to be a bit more effective at fine ways to eliminate my electronic goods. As such, I am looking for some protection along every electrical conductor path, which includes UTP (telephone, data cable), Coax (satellite, OTA), and the common power grid.

Its one thing to look at the 'boutique' products and solutions, but I have more brains than money. Very Happy Has anyone bought the lesser-known brand products, had an event, filed a claim, and been met with post-event satisfaction?

My 2 dogs weighing in at 175 lbs total protect my electronics better than one of Cliff's guns.

Chit.. Who said anything about worried? I am READY..

Mr. Green

But I also have a decent "surge" (bad pun intended) protector that I picked up at an auction installed in the theater..

Something about that phrase "It needs a wash" with it sitting on a washing machine just doesn't sit right - but heck, I'm no gun expert.
Very Happy

OK ron what is that? An m-16, or a Kalash-clone?

And you like it better than an HK MP-5??

Why?

LOL...

I usually disassemble it and throw it in the dishwasher... Then scrub it with some CLP...

That is the roughest of my collection so it gets abused a lot..

I need to replace the hand guards.. they got a little to toasty again over the weekend. Evil or Very Mad

a 75 round drum makes that easy to do...

Sorry I am out.. didn't mean to hijack the thread.. It's just I figure if you are going to post pix of automatic weapons like you are actually going to use them to protect your theater.. ya might as well just have one..

They had a couple MP5's for sale last time I looked at that link I posted...

Oh chit...

And you are the guy that wanted to talk about Iraq with me j/k

Chit that is the most commonly produced rifle in the world..

Clone my ass...

I like that rifle better than the MP5 because I think the rifle length difference is not important I have a 1911 if I need something short... Then I have a nice solid butt stock to use once the ammo runs dry, and the muzzle velocity and impact power of a 7.62 beats the pants off of a 9mm round..

But hey.. that is just me..

My nice AK is pretty accurate at a point target at about 400 yards or so.. That MP5 would be a joke after about 50 yards.

With my AR15( a m16 variant) in the closet I can hold a nice group at around 600 yards...

One shot.. One kill... Leaving the spraying to gangsters... and uhhh the weekends Thumbs Up

I think I need to clarify the reason behind this post. What I am trying to determine is why someone would spend $15 vs $50 vs $1500 vs $5000 on surge protection (and not power conditioning) on products claiming $250K to $5 Million when no one has filed a claim and been successful, post-event, at getting compensation.

Thus, I thought abut asking if anyone has used 'something' and hoped someone would come forth with a successful, or failed, filing claim against the manufacturer. In my mini HT I have a Monster product that I bought at wholesale pricing, but this time around I am looking at something for the family room. Presently, there is $2300-2500 worth of consumer electronics in that room not including the new PC ($1200).

Protection via electric outlet, UTP, CAT, and Coax are all equally of concern. Actually, someone just mentioned breaker-replacements for in-panel (not whole house solutions, but per circuit solutions) applications. This still leaves UTP, CAT, and Coax open.

I used to sell Panamax surge protection. I have filed several claims on behalf of customers, all were honored. Including one where we replaced a 65in Pioneer crt RP.

I have also seen many where the panamax save the entire system, due to lightning strikes.

I know a lot of folks hate the Monster branding and now days I see they are really high priced on a lot of things, that being said I've got the entire theater running through 4 different power centers, projector itself through a 1000mkII the amps and processors through a 5100mkII and everything else divided up between a 2500 and a 2600. One of the units originally was an older 5000 series, the on/off button stopped working, it was always on, called Monster they issued me a number to write on the package and told me to send them the unit. 2 weeks later a brand new in the box 5100mkII shows up. I know its not the same as filing a claim against a whole theater worth of electronics, but when my first 2500 "sacrificed" itself and then would only emit a horrible alarm, they did the same thing send it to us, 2 weeks later spankin new 2600 shows up. They never busted my balls about digging up receipts or anything, although I'm sure if you had to file an insurance claim with them they might want them. My 2 cents

Oh yeah, and this

I prefer a scatter gun for home protection. Chambering a 12ga is the one of the most recognizable sounds on the planet, your aim (more importantly the little ladies or kids)doesn't have to be perfect in the dead of night, and if you miss, no rounds go blasting through the neighbors windows or walls..
My 3 cents.

From another forum:

I just tried to submit a claim for damage to a surge protector company . The damage was almost 9K. I sent the unit back to the manufacturer so they could test it, along with a diagram of how the equipment was connected. They promptly sent the unit back and said it was functioning fine, so they would not cover my claim.

They also said they would only pay the depreciated cost of the damaged equipment if they were at fault. That came to 10-15% of replacement value.

I purchased a new surge protector from a different company. Don't buy a unit expecting to be covered by their claims.

Panamax is the company that would not cover our claim.

Who did you buy the unit from?

panamax works closely w/ dealers and distro's to keep customers happy. Ususally if you have it connected properly its a non issue.

Sorry to hear of your expierence.
