Where to buy Blu-Ray/HD-DVD online in US? How about Canada?

Hey guys,

I'm out of touch with who's got the best prices for buying HD-DVD/Blu-Ray online. Any suggestions?
Bonus points if anyone can recommend a Canada friendly (or even Canadian) source.

I've been buying a few from Futureshop/Bestbuy but prices for some titles are outrageous. Using "Buy Now" from major Ebay resellers has been my best bet so far, but just wondering if there's somewhere else I should be checking before I buy.

A lot of Canadians actually order from Amazon.com but orders are known to ship from Amazon.ca. Prices after shipping apparently are still better than the local Future Shop and Best Buy. With the Paramount/Dreamworks recent announcement releasing exclusively on HD DVD, I may start to order from Amazon.com as well.

I was wondering is someone would mention Amazon.com as their prices are A LOT better than amazon.ca. Just plain silly.

I've got a couple of recent titles in my basket at Amazon.com and will probably just order away. Amazon.ca seems WORSE than futureshop/bestbuy so I have no idea who orders movies (DVD/BD/HD-DVD) from there.

Thanks John. Do you find they're typically cheaper than Amazon.com?

I'm from Canada and just ordered the following 3 Blu-Ray discs from Amazon.com: The Lives of Others, The Lookout, Immortal Beloved. So I thought I'd try DeepDiscount.com and see how it compared:

The Lives of Others

Amazon:$26.95
Deepdiscount: $26.85

The Lookout

Amazon:$23.95
Deepdiscount: $28.67

Immortal Beloved

Amazon:$19.95
Deepdiscount: $21.90

-------------------------------

Amazon total: 70.85
Deepdiscount total: 77.42

Now, both say that shipping is free in the US so Amazon seems cheaper. In Canada they charge me a few bucks for shipping such that the new totals are:

Amazon total: 80.81
Deepdiscount total: 83.37

Pretty close!

In theory "sometimes". In practice, I've never paid 'em. Like someone said, it seems Canadian orders get processed by Amazon.ca.

Once you check out from Amazon.com, the price becomes the same as Amazon.ca....at least, that's what I found! Just be patient...future shop eventually puts everything on sale. I got a bunch of titles for less than $20 a few weeks back.

Funny, I don't find that at all. Amazon.ca is always CRAZY expensive for me (often MSRP) and Futureshop doesn't always have things or is crazy expensive too (MSRP).

Sure, Futureshop often puts stuff on sale, but that's only good if you don't care what you're buying and are just looking for something to watch (and don't mind if it's a year or two old).

I ordered 3 recently released Blu-Ray discs two weeks ago from Amazon.com after checking out all 3 places, here's the price differences between the three:

Amazon.com. $80.81 USD
Amazon.ca $124.72 USD or 54% more expensive!
Futureshop.com: $115.39 USD or 43% more expensive!

Breakdown:

Amazon.com:

The Lives of Others [Blu-ray] $26.95 USD
The Lookout [Blu-ray] $23.95 USD
Immortal Beloved [Blu-ray] $19.95 USD
Shipping & Handling: $9.96 USD
Tax: $0 None! And I have yet to pay duties or taxes at the border!
Total for this Shipment: $80.81 USD or $85.38 CAD

Amazon.ca:

The Lives of Others [Blu-ray] $36.77 CAD (
The Lookout [Blu-ray] $39.96 CAD (!!!)
Immortal Beloved [Blu-ray] $31.92 CAD
Shipping & Handling: $6.92 CAD
Tax (GST & PST): $16.18 CAD
Total for this Shipment: $131.75 CAD or $124.72 USD

Futureshop.com:

The Lives of Others [Blu-ray] $32.99 CAD
The Lookout [Blu-ray] $37.99 CAD (out of stock)
Immortal Beloved [Blu-ray] $29.99 CAD (out of stock)
Shipping & Handling: $5.97 CAD
Tax (GST & PST): $14.98 CAD
Total for this Shipment: $121.92 CAD or $115.39 USD

Sorry, but that's nuts! 40-50% more expensive! Why would ANYONE buy at the other places?

My wife and I buy a lot of books from Amazon.ca, and I use Futureshop.com for a lot things too but they both often really suck for movies and are often out of stock!

Kal,

what Blu-Ray player did you get?? And why did you opt for that instead of HD-DVD?

I thought he went with the PS3. And some of us are playing both fields (like being married and having a mistress on the side).

Ben: After much research (which you can read about here), I bought the PS3.

I originally bought HD-DVD back in March or so timeframe, but then brought it back after a few weeks when the tide seemed to be turning over to Blu-Ray.

I still think that Blu-Ray will win in the long run (as do many others) so that's the way I went. With the recent Paramount/Dreamworks Animation news I may also get an HD-DVD player later this year. Otherwise I'd likely have to wait a good 1.5-2 years to pick up some of the newer titles from those 2 studios.
