Hi all,
Pics from a Barco 801s I'm about to buy ($400). Pull the trigger? Back away slowly? No idea what kind of image I'd get or how long I could expect to run these without needing to retube.
Thanks in advance.

I would say that at this point in the game with non-9" CRT prices dropping, that a moderately high-hour 801s with a fairly worn blue tube is definitely not worth $400. You can also see faint wear on the green tube. Not only will you have the wear to contend with but those tubes probably have 5-8k hours so they'll be pretty soft at this point. My vote is pass.

My vote is Pass - also.
The 801s is a bit long in the tooth now. If you're patient you should be able to pick up a more
recent model for around the same, or not much more.

Definitely towards the upper end of the scale.
I'm sure you'll be able to do better.
It's also interesting that the blue tube seems to show more wear than the green
when generally the green tends to wear faster.
This could be due to the way the photo was taken and the fact that the green colouring
may be masking heavier wear on the green.
You could always offer less. After all if you get it "cheap" it might tide you over.
It would definitely pay to check the PJ out in person to see how the wear affects the PQ.
And brightness. How many hours are on the counter?
I would suspect pretty high.

I believe that in ES sets the blue wears the fastest and in EM sets the green wears the fastest; The tubes in my 801s looked about the same with heavier wear on the blue then on the other tubes.

Zebu hit it on the head. Just about every high hour Sony 12xx you look at will have a worn blue with R and G being almost perfect.

Meant to mention that I once owned an 801s myself (first CRT)
back around 1995-96. A good PJ at the time when 9"ers were well out of reach of mere mortals.
Paid $5000.00 for it. Ouch!!
How times have changed.

Thanks for the advice gents. Any suggestions as to a fair counter-offer?

What it's worth on the market and what it's worth to you may be two different numbers. Knowing what I know now, having owned a few Sony ES sets (1042, 1252, 1271) and then a Marquee 8500 (soon to be 9500LC), my best recommendation is to skip any ES set that's less than perfect, and find yourself an EM set that's in the same condition as this one. For example: (PJ #2, at $650) http://avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=853319 is a hell of a deal for a 8" LC projector. The tubes are already worn a bit, so run the hell out of them and a year down the road add these to the mix: http://avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=884999 and you've gotten yourself a perfect, mint 8"LC projector for less than 2k. With new tubes that will last 6-8k hours.
All this is assuming that you can strech your budget a little bit. But $400 to $650 isn't really a big jump for the kind of image quality you'll see from going from a worn-out 801s to a worn out G70 And once you re-tube the G70 you'll be set until we're all buying bulb machines...

Thanks. I'll take a look at that. Budget can be stretched.
The seller is also throwing in a line doubler and an HD-Fury adapter at no extra cost. Better deal?

I'd say the set on an as is basis is worth $200. Add $200 for the doubler and Fury, and you're right about there. Counteroffer $300.
