Figured it's about time to have a thread dedicated to creating an under-budget masking system for 2.35 or 2.05 screens!

I'm just going to add to this thread whenever I find some usefull info somewhere.

Motorised-Remote Curtain system for OZ 2.35'ers http://archive2.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=589722

Good price? But where to find?!?!

When I was working for my former employer I had access to whatever parts 'n pieces I wanted from old copiers they were tossing out so I grabbed a bunch of 24v stepper motors, mini serpentine belts, mini chains and sprockets, slip clutches, tensioners, controller boards, and a whole regulated 24v DC power panel.

My intention was to motorize the screen curtains and masking but I realized I'd gotten in over my head as I don't know how to build an IR controller. I know they can be bought but it was supposed to be an inexpensive DIY-er (braging rights!) project so for now it all sits in boxes.

There are copier refurb places everywhere who might be happy to let you haul off the old carcasses with all the necessary goodies still intact that just aren't economically feasible for them to fix.

Maybe this is a cheap (free) alternative for those skilled enough to pull it all together?

Interesting, Greg! I doubt any of us thought of your idea before!

Do the 24 volt motors have enough grunt to move a set of curtains?

This guy has an electronic masking system for sale at ~$500. It's a 4:3 120" system that may or may not work for other screen sizes? It's too small for me. Sad

This is what it is:

This is the MSRP stuff on it:

And this is his add on Videogon for it:

Yup they do. Especially the motors from the collater attachment. Throughout the entire machine are gear reduction assemblies.

If the screen were mounted correctly on ball bearings (I got a ton of them also from copiers) on a rail, it should run slicker than snot on a brass doorknob. That's what the copier repair manager told me anyway.

I won't know for sure until winter rolls around and I go for it. Them damn curtains aren't cheap either! Thumbs Down

If you wana save a few bucks on curtains find and old semestrist lady and get her to do the sewing. Figure out how much fabric you need and shop around. That's what I intend to do when the curtain calls.

My friends motherinlaw has been a seemstrist for 30+years.

I definately need someone to modify the curtains I plan to buy from a local theatrical auction house. BIIIIIIG heavy beasts as you would expect seeing as they go from the stage floor to the rope works 20-30 feet up.

I'm thinking one panel should be sufficient and have it cut in half horizontally and have it re-hemmed. For the runner I plan on using garage door track and rollers. That may be overkill but I'll figure that out when I get there.
Thanks for the reply AR. Good suggestion seeing as my wife doesn't sew. (I hear that word from her all the time....it just isn't spelled the same). Laughing

Actually that's a pretty damn good idea. I didn't burn any bridges when I left my last job so they're still a good source for the motors, relays and such. I also have another source from a copier refurber I used to work with who started his own company.

Hmmmmm. Now for a name...Custom Curtains...Rags 2 Riches..
Dungeon Drapes...Nah. I think if I start a company it'll HAVE to be called something like... Advanced Systems Services....the acronym on the ballcaps and tee shirts would get some attention. And a great tag line to boot..."You call...we haul ASS." Wink

We control the horizontal, we control the vertical. We can make things bright or we can make it night.

Make the curtain call, call Curtain's on Command.

Please call COC for all your hanging needs. Fast freindly service. We at COC take pride in the way our work is hung. You can extend them at the push of a button.

Remember HUNG with PRIDE right in front of your eyes. It's the last COC you'll ever need to call. Many sizes to choose from. Just moved into a new house and don't want to scrap the old ones? Why not get an extension from COC? We carfully match the color to what you currently have and can extend to any length. Call Mr. Long for details.
Need small one's? Call our salesman Mr. Stubbs. He can meet all your small COC needs.

Thumbs Up

I"m digging up a corpse here a bit, but I'm starting to research a CIH setup for when I re-design my HT. Our buddy Gary is holding out on us. It turns out that he came up with an inexpensive motorized masking system and posted on it a bit on the A site a while back. I'm going to PM him and ask him if he could post some more info here. I for one am highly interested in learning more about his solution.
