Plasma had worse contrast than LCD flat-panel?

On Saturday, I went to a distant Costco and viewed a new plasma flat-panel by Vizio. I had been hoping to find a Maxent but its discontinued. Anyway, standing there looking at this 50" plasma was suppose to produce a better contrast condition in general than an LCD, but that was not apparent.

According to Vizio's website, the outlandish contrast performance was rated at an unbelievable 15K:1. Yet, the 3000:1 rated LCD had better blacks. Both were using standard setups (compared movie, normal, and sports), but this product must have had something wrong (other than the component feed).

I'd have to say that its pq was by far worse than 90% of all of the displays there, and all had the same feed. I wonder if something went wrong with this unit, which was selling for $1399.

Oops, I have since learned not to dilly-dally in waiting to get something. The Maxent had a much better picture for intra-plasma comparisons, and certainly better than the LCDs, but waiting caused me to miss out as no one has them now.

Of course my conspiracy theory suggests that Costco put out a Discontinued condition and Best Buy came in and bought all of their stock. Why not since the BB sale price is $200 higher, and the online regular price is $400 higher. Ba$tards.

Isn't it sacrilegious to be talking about plasma sets on a CRT PJ forum?

Let me get this straight--you actually think you can reach conclusions about displays in their uncalibrated state?

You must be joking because I cannot believe you have hung around here this long and learned nothing.

I recently purchased a Panasonic 42" plasma for the bedroom...the same one that everyone seems to have on sale now that it's about to be superseded...Dave is right, out of the box it was turned up so high it hurt my eyes, but after calibration...even a rudimentary, by-eye calibration, the picture is much better than my CRT-jaded brain expected.

I'd highly recommend it to anyone considering a plasma as a second TV.

You might want to look at those in RL.. I find the LCDs that large horrible. The slow reaction time of the pixels is very annoying to watch. The plasma is much easier to watch to me.

Dave, thanks for the kind words. I spent a half-hour fiddling with the remote trying to figure out why the unit couldn't look less worse than the LCDs in the store. I wasn't trying to reach the 'best it could look' but typically LCD flat-panels are terrible at contrast in comparison to plasma under the same viewing environment.

In fact, I'll go on record to say this was the first time I walked into any B&M and found side-by-side conditions where the LCD looked BETTER than this particular plasma. No, not talking about some result where nitwit wannabee went into custom mode and made the unit look terrible, but rather neither pre-set mode nor fiddling with it in custom mode could alter how bad this unit looked.

By far, it was the worse presented image of anything in the store. And for this you ignore 100% and instead attack me? Thumbs Down

I was trying not to be on-topic (i.e. CRT) by posting something not about CRTs in the off-topic forum.

What is your definition of off-topic? I'll vote whatever you consider and ask the forum admin to implement it. In fact, have you brow-beat everyone in all of the other off-topic threads in the off-topic forum? Please, do, to be consistent.

I bought a Samsung, and have since decided that before I can bring it home tomorrow to go get my money back. lol

No, the picture was nice, and it was a lot nicer than that Vizio, but I think I can wait until the 60" start coming on down. Heck, even the same-resolution 60" Vizio had a much better pciture. It was on sale this weekend at Costco for $2599.
