For some reason this is sticking in my mind, and I can't quite wrap an understanding around it despite reading the user and install manual multiple times. Things I know:
The projector's CRTs are 4:3 The 10 default G90 video memory slots have 5 4:3 and 5 16:9 presets, but these can be modified Video memory is different than input memory, which is assigned automatically based on input signal frequency I've been watching 16:9 content pretty successfully on the default VidMem 1, a 4:3 setting
So, the question boils down to, are the 16:9 video memory slots just pre-configured blanking settings, or is it doing something else to the signal to make it more appropriate for the different aspect ratio.
Side question, I have a DVP-5000 between the LD player and the projector. When watching LDs, which are all letterboxed 4:3 sources, should I set the processor to 4:3 or letterbox? I'm doing 4:3 now, but could I be eeking out any additional signal quality that I'm missing out on somehow?

Had the G-70 for years. It's memory structure I believe is similar to the G-90.
The 10 Preset memories are based on the input frequency, not the aspect ratio. The first 10 are the "base" memories.
So if you have two signals close in frequency but not exact, the first signal/registration will load mem 4 (for 720p 16:9 in my case). The second signal may or may not load/copy mem 4 settings into the next available free memory slot, 11-99. Also I believe the G-90 has the extended service menu function that lets you copy memory registration to any mem location you wish.
As for video memory my understanding it loads the frequency triggered Preset memory then Video memory applies additional limited geometry settings. The way I used it was for an X-Box to tweak RGB CENT. The X-Box used the same base memory as my main source that I had meticulously dialed in and did not want to mess with it.
