What's this about? Feeding an RGB signal into a TV that only accepts component? Why not use an external RGB to component converter instead?

(Sorry, I look at the thread from the start and there's no intro or explanation as to why)

It's a retro computer/ retro gaming console thing. Most of the old computers from the 80's and consoles from the 90's output RGB and sync.
Modding a TV to accept these signals makes for a MUCH cleaner picture.

Have a look here at David, the 8bit guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLz6pgvsZ_I

Also most of these small TV's only have a composite input. No component.

Interesting. I would have figured that good RGB to component converter would do the same, but I can see how going RGB all the way through would be better as the TV is internally RGB.

EDIT: No component here obviously given the age of these electronics. Composite only! So we're using RGB instead of composite.

I have an old Sampo direct-view that can support both SD resolutions & up to 720p + 1024x768 on the VGA inputs. Someone from the forum in the OP actually made a guide on how to feed RGB into the SD input board, my friend helped me do so last year. I love this monitor, it uses a monitor-grade Toshiba Microfilter tube & those were apparently nearly nonexistent in the USA!

We opted to use four BNC connectors for the 15kHz RGB, rather than another VGA connector. Sometimes I will run Laserdiscs and VHS through an old CYP CMT-7 decoder (composite and svid to component or RGB) on the thing, as the comb filtering inside the set is atrocious. Or I will just use a video processor and watch that stuff in a higher res on the VGA input Smile

Yeah some of those odd ball sets with the VGA input were very specific. I have a Samsung that is supposed to have a VGA input but was taken out for the Canadian market. I asked the engineers at Samsung Canada if we could put it back in and they said NO but (wink) if some one WERE to do it you may have an issue syncing to anything above 800x600 and the picture would be shifted left.

I remember the first time I used an external comb filter. The TV at the time looked meh...after I ran the external comb filter into it via the YCbCr input wow! I *think* that was a Toshiba but that was in 1999 and my Covid brain can't remember for sure.
