I have a Sony VPH-1271QM with fungus inside the lenses. I have seen guides on how to clean and refill the glycol in the front of the tubes, but my tubes are fine.

Does anyone know how to open the lenses, clean and refill them? Help much appreciated.

I think the fungus inside the lenses is affecting the focus and sharpness dramatically. I bought the projector for 240p, 480p retro gaming so It is not too bad, but something I'd like to fix.

Is it in the lens or in the front of the tube?

Definitely in the lenses, all three of them. The front of the tubes are good. The tubes have colored glycol (Except blue) but each lens is clear.

Get another set of lenses. Problem solved, for minimal cost and effort.

IF you can disassemble the lenses with the right tools and reassemble them correctly when you're done,
you still have to face the fact that lens fungus usually eats the anti-reflection fluoride coating off the glass,
and actually that is the food for the fungus. And the fungus secretes acid which etches the glass.

So to correct all that you'll end up having to get the lens elements repolished and the coatings reapplied for
it to be right. Which is costly.

Just see if Curt has a spare set of lenses and get them from him if so.

Hrm, considering I'm in Australia and the whole unit cost me $50 maybe not.

How important is the anti-reflective coating? The front of my lenses are scratched quite badly already. What happens without coating?

If you want to change the coolant to clear, I have a set of HD144 colour filtered lens with adaptors to fit where the HD8 came off.
This would make a nice upgrade to the Sony. 😃.

I have no idea what lenses fit the 12xx. Are you saying I would have to change the tube coolant to clear to use filtered lenses?

What is the going price for a set of (8 inch?) lenses? As I said I bought the unit for $50 and don't know how much I really want to spend as i have never seen what a good condition set looks like.

What lens are on it? Postage would be more than you paid for the projector. Remove the front part of the lens by undoing the guide pins and clean them. It may be good enough for starters.

Well, if you were to remove them all, you would really not like the results. Those coatings are applied to optics for
very good reasons indeed.

Even the lenses in "cheap" RPTVs used coated elements.

The reflections they tame otherwise end up on the screen. You'll see them.

I think he needs to solve the focus problem then work out if he wants to go further with the unit. I have a set of lens that I would give him for free. The problem would be the cost of postage. Is it worth it?
