Has anyone investigated what makes for a three dimensional image?

I have seen images that look really flat and some that look like they have more depth. What causes that? Could it be the material or the machine that is presenting the image? I remember the Roger Rabbi movie and they used a lot of shading to create the effect.

In the display it's : high contrast plus high motion resolution, accurate (effortless) grayscale ramp capability ( can be a problem with PWM) , miniscule halation or (stray)light bleed.

Basically what makes a sky@night scenery look good (without a nearby city's light pollution)
