Ok guys I need some advice here.

I bought a used XG110LC locally for $250. This is my first CRT projector although I have owned several DLP projectors and several rear projection CRT monitors in the past so I am not entirely new, just new to CRT front projection.

Before I bought the projector I tested the S-Video input but couldn't test the RBG input because I didn't have the proper cable. The previous owner is another HT'er and seems very knowledgeable about HT, projection, and this projector specifically. Everything he said is backed up by my own research and reading. He assured me that the projector was working fine and I have no doubt that he believed that, and in no way do I think he was trying to scam me. The projector seems to have low hours (~2500 hours reported although I know that can be reset by the user) and the output seems bright.

Anyway I thought the price was good, but when I got the projector home I'm finding it needs a new F-Drive PWB board. As soon as I connect a RGB source, the projector shuts down with an F9 error code on the back panel. I have tried 2 different RGBHV cables and 2 different HTPC sources. I have tried all kinds of resolutions and refresh rates and each and every time the projector shuts down within 10-30 seconds with the same F9 error code.

I understand that its my own fault for buying the unit without fully testing it. The previous owner has been helpful in troubleshooting it, and he has offered to refund my money if I can't get it working.

So here's my question... what would you guys do? So far I've spent $250 on the projector plus about $50 in cables. And I can get a new F-Drive board for about 30% of what I paid for the projector. If I replace the F-Drive board is there anything else that's likely to fail? Should I cut my losses and take his offer to refund my money and start over with something else? Or considering the total I will have spent, is the XG110 still worth it due to the potential picture quality I could be getting?

CRT projectors for sale aren't exactly plentiful in my area, so if I don't keep the XG110, I will probably end up just going the digital route again.

I respect all of your opinions, and I'm just curious what you more knowledgeable folks would do in my situation.

It all depends on tube condition. Post non-flash pictures of the tube faces ( behind the lenses ) and we'll see how it looks.

I hope I have captured what you're trying to see on the tubes. My camera was having a hard time focusing on the glass.

Edited to put images inline:

Great condition, definitely worth doing!

It looks like maybe a tiny hint of 4:3 wear on the green only, but that could be shadows. If the set was used with factory default brightness and contrast, then I'd say under 500 hours on the tubes. Hard to find, that's for sure!

Wow that's great news Curt. I see what you mean about the green tube. I can't tell from the pic if its a shadow or not but I will confirm when I get back home. Either way I don't think that would be a deal breaker.

Due to their sharpness, a bit of wear after a few 100 hours is normal. Ditto for the Sony g70 and G90 sets. Nothing to worry about, it's normal. I don't think you'll see it in your image at all.

Can you guys confirm that if my F-Drive board was working properly I should be able to see a 1024x768@60Hz image with no problem? AFAIK that's well within limits of the projector.

I wish my XG1100 tubes looked that good! Definitely worth spending the money on!! I have over $1000 into my XG (the PJ was only half that). I haven't used it in a while, but I love it just as much as the first day I saw it with its other 4 siblings Very Happy (Thanks jarseneu!)
