|
|
Heard HV arc, then 8500 Ultra shut down. Removed the cover, fired up again, thought I saw arc just forward of the splitter. Noticed the blue/white wire on the connector in the picture slightly pulled out (could see metal extending a bit). The splitter looks good, clean with no burn marks or signs of arcing.
I shoved the wire back into the connector but now no HV, get HV fail light. Replaced the HV power supply- still bad.
Could the loose wire have been the source of the arc? and maybe it killed the HDM?
Can I swap a HDM from a non-ultra machine?
Are there any trouble shooting steps I could do to make sure I have the root cause of the arcing?
thanks

Swap the HDM, the arc most likely nuked it. Any HDM will work.

look at the tech bulletin called "cleaning up deflection coil crowding at HV splitter". The way they originally jammed all those wires under 35Kv hi tension wires is really foolish. any arc from the splitter is likely to jump to a connector.
Also, be sure an re-assembly that the PS wire goes to the correct port labeled IN on the side of splitter in White letters, the other 3 don't really matter.

the one thing I do different is the Vertical and Convergence I pull thru the slot that is now on the right. Don't bunch it up with the blue/purple stig wires.

That looks like a good idea on the crowding issue, it does seem like a mess of wires too close to high voltage.
Haven't had time to play with the projector since the arc, my truck's radiator blew up just minutes after the projector popped. when it rains....

Bought a used hdm, fiired it up and once again heard hv arc and got the error. What can i do to isolate the source of the arc? I didn't see anything but it sounded like it was close to the splitter.

HV arcs are deceiving at best if seen from an angle. More than once I started replacing HV leads on one tube, thinking I'd found it, only to find out it was a different tube, as I wasn't right on top of the arc when it happened.
Fix the HDM ( I can repair it if you want), replace the HV splitter right off the bat, and to do it right, change the HV leads all at once going to the tubes. that should do it. Or, change the HV leads one at a time, but you risk nuking the HDM each time it arcs.
I've got good used HV leads along with splitters. Can do a package deal if you want.

I just tried again with the metal cover off of the green tube, saw an arc on the first yoke nearest the hv boot. At least i think i am close to the root cause. Think I'll swap the tube.
