Last night my Barco 800 suddenly went quiet..... very quiet. no light output anymore, no fans rotating anymore, only the standby led near the power button stays on.

When I tried to power on the pj from standby, the smps chirps about five times while the status voltage led's flickr from full to blank but no startup from the smps. (the only led that even does not light full-on is the -17V led, it changes between half lid and off) Even the green led on the standby power supply (attached to the main power board) changes from full to dim in accordance with the chirping.

To narrow down the search on what failed/ what could caused this I removed all boards, including convergence and eht boards. I disconnected the RGB amp boards and tried again. Same situation but now the fans do rotate a bit. (altough certainly not like a normal way of steady rotation).

It seems with boards inserted. Ie the smps sees more load, starting is even more difficult.

Second step in trying to narrow some things more was to remove all fuses from the smps board, except the main 300V voltage fuse and the fuse from the standby power supply. Helas, same situation.

Is someone over here who has experience in putting guidelines in repairing those smps ? I have the common electronic repair tools at home (scope, power supplies, etc). but I have no experience in repairing smps's.

... or maybe ... option 2 : someone from belgium, holland has a spare 800 data smps ?

Pull out the SMPS and see if one of the large eletrolytic caps is shorted. They are right on the motherboard under the SMPS. Measure to see if one of them reads a dead short. If not, the SMPS is bad. If you can't find one there, then email me at curtpalme at shaw.ca, as I have them here.

Changed the three caps on the main board without metering them with brand new I had lying around (1000µF/35V) in a quick and dirty way.
Helas, the problem stays the same.
