I would like too know if the Lumagen 2041 does a better job than the video processing in a 3 chip DLP example Sim2 or DPI?
So if I by a 3 chip DLP do I need the Lumagen?

What sort of image processing does the SIM2 or DPI have? I would be very surprised it had the level of processing a Lumagen can do, including a full 9x9x9 LUT for colour correction of 729 points in real-time. (Note that the model you're asking about is discontinued - newer models now do 17x17x17 for 4913 points.

O.k
so which 3 chip DLP does not have a video processing on board, so that it could be used with the Lumagen?

I have no idea. A quick Google search tells me the 1100es is a newer version that replaces the older 1000es.
If you're in the market for a $28K projector like this, I'm sure your dealer will work with you and explain the differences and find what's right for you. You can also visit Sony's website and look at specifications.

The VW1100 did replace the 1000.
The VW1000 was released pretty prematurely (relative to 4K/UHD) with HDMI 1.4 and couldn't handle the newer HDCP 2.2 required for their newer UHD media streamer. Considering the cost of the VW1000, Sony made the upgrades available to their customers. It was like $2500, and you got a new main logic board for the projector, a new lamp, the newer media streamer, and a Sony tablet to control the streamer which I don't think had any other remote.
The CMS is apparently pretty lame in the VW1000/1100, so guys with those projectors wanting good color would probably want a Lumagen, perhaps the reason behind the OP's question.
Street price on the VW1100 is now well under $20k - more like $15-17 these days.
Unless you're pushing the limits on screen size, or unless a guy got some kind of a bargain on the VW1100, the VW600 would be a much better choice for must users.

Yes, Sony has had a messed up CMS ever since the Ruby and Pearl and it has not gotten any better. The only good way to get an accurate color gamut across the entire gamut is with a Radiance processor.
