I have the opportunity to purchase the above pj. It is dated October 1996. The owner does not know the tube condition or how to check the hours on it. So far, we have communicated by email only and he also wrote that he has spare used tubes but does not know the condition of said tubes. A Nec scan converter is also included. Is this worth investing to upgrade my 6 PG Xtra? Asking $500.00 but negotiable.

Very typical of a seller when he's trying to hide tube condition. How can he NOT know the condition of the spare set of tubes?

Definitely not worth it at $500 if you can't see the tube faces. IN fact, I've got a near minty NEC XG that I'd sell for $500, but of course there'd be about $350 to get it to you in shipping.

The NEC scaler is worthless, unless it's the last 4000Q. That was a nice unit, but it't not HD capable. It does do a nice job of upscaling an SD signal though.

$500 is way too much, because its condition unkown. Curt's set for $500 is everything he says itll be and its been tested.
