I had a problem in the past with my Integra shutting off at peak levels sometimes during movies. I thought I had the problem solved when I went back through all the settings and turned down all the levels in the integra to zero and then used the amps to balance the levels, seemed to work great for awhile. The other week a friend was over a we were watching Pacific Rim and at a peak point sure enough the Integra kicked off. When I checked it it was hot as hell. It runs hot anyway but it seemed a little hotter than normal. I had a dual fan laptop cooling pad that I haven't used and I plugged it in to the USB port in the front of the Integra pulling air out. So far it has worked like a charm, its silent and turns off when the integra does. I tried to make it repeat the shutdown playing the same movie at the same level and for the same amount of time. Don't know for sure if it solved the problem but so far so good. Just thought I would pass it on.

Cool (literally)! Keep us updated on whether the issue comes back.

The Integras do run hot. Even the pre pros (no amp) run pretty warm.

So do their sister brand Onkyo, I have one that can sit here just being plugged into the AC outlet, turned on and it would get hotter than hell doing nothing...

And that's not a surprise considering how many faulty onkyo IC's I've seen. If they didn't run the damn things so hot, there wouldn't be so many faulty ones out there!

OK so now that I opened my mouth about my great cooling fan idea I jinxed it. I watched Iron Man 1 & 2 last nite and when I was shutting everything down I noticed the cooling pad was not running. I unplugged it from the USB port and plugged it back in and nothing. I thought maybe it finally burned out. I plugged it in again and it turned back on. I let it run for about 10 minutes then took it upstairs and connected it to my laptop it ran till I shut it off and went to bed. I turned it back on this morning and it has been running for 4 hours so far. The USB port on the Integra says its 5 volts 100 MA. The cooling pad says it runs 5V 1.2 watts. It run for at least 35 hours before this occurred at least as far as I know. I plugged in another one and let it run for 30 minutes and it seemed fine. Any ideas or suggestions ? THANKS.

If the idle current is not properly set it can both run hot and shut down occasionally.

There is no adjustment on this cooling pad or my other one. Does somebody make one that does. Otherwise I could just elevate it off the top of the Integra so even if it does shut off it doesn't block the vents.

Mac is referring to the amplifier idle current adjustments for each amplifier channel. They have to be properly set as he said or your amp will run hot and that can cause the issue you're having.

The ironic part is I have several receivers here that use internal cooling fans, including the onkyo I was speaking of earlier, and I have never seen the fans spin up no matter how hot the receivers get... The only one that it does seem to work on is my AVR 5805 and that takes a while to get hot anyway (once it does though, it can heat a room up Very Happy )

OH. Is that something I could fix ? Keep in mind I know next to nothing about electronics.

It's something that if you are brave working on stuff while its live and all that then its possible, its a potentiometer adjustment on each channel, but it isn't just turning a knob and that's all. Its a bit tedious because even turning the potentiometer a bit too far can be a bad thing. I managed to fry a Marantz amp channel by turning the pot too much on it, but I did sort of intentionally do it just to see what would happen (the joys of being dangerous Very Happy ).

Needless to say, in all honesty, it is something a tech should probably do if you want it to be done right and without any possible damage to the unit.

If you don't want it serviced to see what the issue is, then a small desk fan would also work blowing onto it instead of your laptop cooler. That's how a plasma I received from a friend once was cooled, it never had any fans in it and it just got too hot to run after a couple hours, keeping the fan on it kept it working (that and the occasional thwack on the back of it when the picture would black out in the middle of a video game! >_< )

I found an older cooling pad that had the wire bared so I assume that's why we quit using it. It seems to keep running, so far at least. The weird thing is its only got one single red wire running to the jack, but it works somehow. So far so good.

It could be internally grounded, but still odd that there is only one wire Smile

FWIW Playing music all day(loud) The cooling pad ran the whole time. It may just be a placebo effect but I swear it sounds better when its running cooler.

It probably does sound better when its cooler, when its as hot as you say it is, the amplifier outputs could be "breaking down" or distorting because they are producing so much heat and can't cool themselves properly. If they stay cool, the distortion should be "normal", whatever normal is for the integra.

Update. I bought one these fans and it has feet that elevate it so that even if the fan should shut off it doesn't block the cooling vents. It was cheap. $ 15. and is silent, works very well so far, it didn't shut off once when running for 6+ hours. I bought a spare. It helps a lot.

I made some stand offs and flipped the fan to blow the air into the Integra, I will let you know how it goes.

OK so its been a month now and last night it kicked off again. It was running for about 2 and 1/2 hours when it tripped. It was during an explosion scene. It seems like every time it "trips" it is during a loud scene in a movie. Any guesses ?

If the Integra has preamp outs, use them and use separate power amps for each channel. From your posts in the past, you run things REALLY hard, and I'll bet the Integra is simply overheating. Get.. More.. Power. Smile
