I was wondering where everyone would be, if we were chasing the Digital "State of the Art".

It's been years since I've done any serious theater work. My theater is pretty state of the art as far as I'm concerned. A few minor up grades on occasion, other then that I have been just enjoying it. Last night I was watching a movie with fairly good image quality and it occurred to me, that it reminded me of seeing a image which was compatible to film at movie theaters.

Now if I had dumped the CRT and jumped on the Digital boat years ago, would I be happy, probably not. With every new model digital projector coming out constantly, I would be feeling inadequate, "Image Envy". I actually have a friend that is into flat panels and is doing just that. Not happy with what he has, or not happy because there is something "Better" (at least that is what they are advertising), buying a new panel (with the option to return) just to see if it will be any better then his old "awesome" display.

Is that common over in the digital arenas? Chasing Nirvana?

I know exactly what you mean! Companies are counting on us to by the latest and greatest. They want us to the point that we buy a new one every other year. If you but a front loading washer(my worst mistake ever), you will experience this.

Why should digital be any different than CRT ? 7,8,9 inch. scaler, video processer,high end cables, high gain screen,etc... etc...

I've owned the RS1, RS2, RS35, RS50, and RS55 from JVC. At the time I upgraded almost every year to take advantage of relatively major updates (increases in contrast ratio, addition of a full CMS, eShift processing, etc), but also to maximize the resale value of my PJs. Most of my upgrades cost me little to nothing because I would sell right after CEDIA, which was a large factor in my deciding to upgrade.

It's easy to read forums like AVS and get caught up in some people's comparisons of last year's model to this year, and to think that each new iteration of projector is leaps and bounds better than the last. It's true that this can breed a sense of "upgraditis" in some, but the reality is that most of the changes every year are evolutionary rather than revolutionary and there are plenty of people who buy digital projectors and happily hold on to them for years.

Of course, after a while, complete contentment with what you have relies - at least in part - on not experiencing what's better than what you have:

I don't think a majority of the digital owners are upgrading every year. I think there are a small percentage of digital buyers that buy every year and those are usually the vocal ones over at AVS. More power to them, but as Hog noted most improvements each year are evolutionary not revolutionary.

On a personal note, my best friend has owned exactly two projectors in the last ten years. His first was the Sanyo PLV70 which he replaced with a RS45 two years ago. I needle him about upgrading to 4k, but he just laughs off any upgrade for at least another two to five years.
