Hello all, its been some time since ive tweaked my G70, i forgot how much better it looks when setup!! Couple of questions, would there be any negative effects of opening the 4 holes on the Eye-One so it can catch more light? i guess i could get false accuracy when it comes to light intensity but would i be able to read low IRE windows better? And, what causes the blue hump? i dont really have it anymore, is the hump equivalent to how bright you driving the set?
Using PS3 as source via Component...

I just tried to run a calibration with my i1Display 2 a couple of weeks ago, and it made the image worse than without. Obviously, it's gone badly out of calibration.
I suppose it's probably 3 years old, but man - that really sucks. I've always stored it in a ziplock bag in my cool, dry basement. I don't think it's even ever left the house, so never outside of probably 65-75 degrees, and never outside normal interior humidity. I have no interest in spending $250 every couple of years to replace a meter, only to just throw away the old one. Is there any way to keep these things from becoming trash can fodder? Can they be recalibrated or repaired any more affordably than just throwing them away and replacing?

if you had a spectroradiometer like the i1 Pro then you can profile the D2 to that and still use it.
There are older version i! pros for sale on Ebay all the time since they came out with the new version.
They 95% of the time still are accurate.

Keeping it in a cool dry place in a zip lock with some desiccant packs is the best way. Newer meters like the Display 3 should drift less since they're sealed.
You can do as Nashou mentions and use a spectro to profile the faster reading colorimeter before you go to use it (assuming the software allows for this like ChromaPure does - it's automated/has a wizard for doing this "profiling").
You can also send the meter in to get it recalibrated if you're using ChromaPure. This is done against a $10,000 spectro and offsets are also created for 10+ different display types to not only bring the meter back into spec (or probably better since they're never 100% accurate to begin with) but to make it even more accurate since certain display types can vary/interact with the meter. They call this a the "PRO" series or turning the meter into a "PRO" version. In this case your Display 2 would become a Display 2 PRO. To about how this is done, see the section called "" here: http://www.curtpalme.com/ChromaPure_EyeOneDisplay3.shtm
While this is for the Display 3 PRO, it's exactly the same for the Display 2 PRO (or any other colorimeter that can be turned "PRO").
You can read more about profiling and re-calibrating in my FAQ "Which meter is right for me?": https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=11436.html

Its always just sat on my shelf in my theater. I didn't know it had to be treated like seafood on a summer day in July!
I'd guess its about 3-4 yes old...

I really wish I knew these things only had a 2 year shelf life. What's this spectro you mention? A device that cost more than the PJ itself?

Yeah, I have to agree. It seems like it's a case of, "This meter is crap, this meter is fast but will drift, this meter won't drift but is useless for <30 IRE, and this meter works great for everything, but will cost a paycheck or two. Take your pick."
Basically, it sounds like there's no way to do a really good job of calibrating without about a grand of equipment, a third of which you have to replace once every year or pay to have it profiled, and of course you need… Never mind. Makes me want to call Ken or Craig and be done with it, but then that's probably an annual thing, too.
My meter is shot, my software is out of date… The developers won't let anybody rent or share the stuff… I'm kind of starting to feel like not giving a damn if my projector is calibrated.

OK, so I spend say, $250 on that i1Pro… It has sh*tty low-light performance though, so I can use that to profile my existing i1d2… Which software does that, though? Is that Chromapure? Standard?
My old CalMAN is badly out of date, so either I upgrade it (I sent an email to check pricing) or I toss it and switch to Chromapure Standard for $160.
Regardless, I'll probably have to spend $350-400 to get back up and running again.
Another option is I see that Spectracal will rent a CalMan 5 Enthusiast kit with their $695 C6 (which is supposed to be way faster and way more accurate) for $129 for 14 days. I could rent it for $129, do a couple of my displays one weekend, a buddy's displays the next, and only be out $65 apiece each year. Seems like that might be the smart money for me.

Though not as "automagically" as what ChromaPure (all versions) does. ChromaPure has a built in tool exactly for meter profiling like this (it's a few clicks) while with HCFR, correct me if I'm wrong, but you have to manually do offsets (?). (It's been a while since I used it).
