I just got a set of 10F lenses. They were shipped in a box with bubble wrap and plastic dishes on board, but the bubbles and dishes got crushed, and the lenses hit each other in a few spots (scratches through the anodized aluminum).

I'm not concerned about the scratches in the aluminum, but it seems there are some areas on the back of the lenses where the bowls were rubbed against the coatings on the lens, leaving areas where the coatings seem to have been damaged, or rubbed off. I don't see scratches in the actual glass, but I do see the coatings have been damaged.

Of course, this damage is in the center area of every lens...

My question is, can you actually see this damage on the screen when projecting? Will it show up as variations in brightness or something?

I'm not ready to mount these yet, and I'd like to know if it's even worth it...

I knew that answer was coming... Smile

Anyone ever projected through coating damaged lenses and actually seen the damage as an abberation on the screen?

Before you do anything, we they insured? USPS is pretty good about paying up if you have documentation of the damage. UPS and FedEx, forget it.

Fed-Ex will pay but be in for a ride of constant and total aggravation.

I'd guess there's a reasonable chance you won't notice it. You've got two things to worry about: focal issues and reflections.

The lenses are focused on the tube face. Anything not in that plane -- including the rear lens surface -- is way out of focus. You can stick your fingers in front of a lens and not see it on the screen, just a dimming of the image. I suspect any minor mars on the back of the lens will be the same. I doubt you'll see them.

The main purpose of the coating is anti-reflective. If it's rubbed off, you may have more reflection off the back off the lens. That may affect your static/ANSI contrast -- you may have more light scattering into dark areas of the image. Whether you'll notice it is hard to say. I agree with Nash: give it a try and see how it looks.

We had some HD117 lenses those were left out in the weather, you can't see through one of them it was so crap, an other one had so much coating damage that it produced a totally washed out image with zero contrast, but again the coating was gone from all elements, totally. So I guess you'll be ok.

I have had the coating removed on the front side of the lens and it wasn't to bad. If you don't like it, then you could see about getting them recoated. That may be more trouble than they are worth unfortunately.

I doubt if you would see anything.

I had lenses with the coating on the screen side of the lenses missing in quite a few places, it could not be seen in the image.
