Ive been looking at some screen materials to make a new screen, im getting abit sick of painting the wall and never being able to get it ultra smooth ( im not happy enough with it... )
I saw this here:

...which looks like it might be a good option, 1.26 gain they say, ultra smooth for sharp focusing they say... Free shipping cause im in Australia, buying from USA could be cheaper to buy material, but the shipping will sure change that in most cases.
It seems as though some of the sharpness I seem to be losing on the Barco could be due to the surface of the wall not being perfectly smooth, so I would like it to be that way.

There is no substitute for the Stewart ST130. Expensive, but the best.
It's what I use as do about 70% of all my clients including digital.

I can't offer any advice on material, but I think you're on the right track, Case... I noticed something similar soon after I switched from the G70 to the JVC. The light specular pebble finish that was fine with the (slightly) softer G70... It really seems to interfere with the definition of really fine detail with the JVC... It isn't that the detail isn't there; I think it's that the "grain" of the screen fights with the fine picture detail.
So, now I'm thinking about a newer screen, and going AT at the same time. Stewart isn't even remotely in the budget, so whatever I do, I'll probably end up with Seymour Screen Excellence Enlightor-4k. Just need to figure out size, how I want to mount it, if I want to change speakers, etc... Always with the decisions.
He has a 1.3-gain solid material for DIY, but I assume it would be cost-prohibitive to ship to Oz.

I can't see how sanding is going to accomplish anything, Spanky... Sanding will take away material and level it, but there's no way in hell you'd ever get a nice, uniform consistent reflection and diffusion.

Yeah, but then he's right back where he started.
Painting a good screen isn't trivial. You can get paint as flat as a mirror by block-sanding. The car guys do it all the time. The problem is then putting a nice smooth surface back down. Like we just said, the car guys block sand and polish. That won't work for a screen because then you end up with a shiny surface when you need matte - diffusion.
What you need is a very flat, but diffuse surface - something that's extremely difficult. There's a reason good commercial screens are expensive.

Yep, thats about it, if its shiny it looks horrid, if you sand it more coarse it looks scratched.
I installed a digital at work in a new sports bar project me and a couple other blokes are working on, i have a builder working with me and got him to make the screen from custom board. He did an outstanding job on it, painted with a sponge roller, looks great.
Difference there is its dead flat, mine is plasterboard with timber frame behind it.

not really. if you sand after primer, and especially between top coats you get a much smoother result.
there is also the option of spraying on the paint.

There are ways to sand it without making it glossy. Of course with how cheap spray guns are these days, it would take very little money to spray.
Another alternative is one of the rigid substrates like Gatorboard or Sintra. I sent some samples to mechman and he posted the measurements on them about two or three years ago. I am not sure what the equivalent in Oz is, but these are sign boards.
