I have been tasked with prepping and shipping two Runco 1200 projectors. I found two boxes that were being thrown out at work (see attached). With some glue and screws and some 1/2" or 1/4" plywood I could really strengthen these things.
My thoughts are that I would remove the lenses, wrap the projectors in plastic then a moving blanket and strap them down inside the box.
I believe one box is big enough to fit two G70s, I'm hoping a 1200 with lenses removed is similar in length. Does anyone know the length of a 1200 with the lenses removed? The internal dimensions of each box is 41" x 56".
Is this overkill? The way the lenses hang way out on this projector kind of scares me (damage wise). Is a simple pallet adequate ?
What would you guys do (and not do)? I'm sure there are plenty of badly shipped projector stories.

The 1200 is a big machine... The Projector specs page says the 1200 is 44.5 x 25.6 x 15.0, so your 41x56 is plenty big and then some.
Personally, I'd want to remove the lenses and box them separately. Hopefully, they can lay inside of a box at the back (shallow) end of the machine.
Other than replacing the cardboard with plywood to reduce the likelihood of fork damage, it looks like you're in pretty good shape!

Here are a couple pics of what youll have to fit in the box, which may help you figure out what youre up against.
You can see the cover standing there on the floor beside the longe.

Corvevetteman, think you could take a quick measurement of what the length would be if the lenses were removed. thanks

Electrohome was the only company to support the tube at the neck as well as the bell, the others all risk snapping a tube neck from the weight of the coils with a drop or sudden downward impact. It's not common, but has happened to Curt a few times from shipping directly on a pallet.

Let me add to this: Projectors like the Marquee, Barcos and G90 are pretty much built like tanks. The key is to get the projector box not to overhang on the pallet. With the Barcos, the length is right around 42-44", so it's really close to the 48" length of the pallet.
The only massive damage I've ever had to projectors is a forklift tine running through the side of the set, in which case, even a wooden box won't protect the set.
Typically I use a triwall box to house the projectors I ship, but even some heavy moving blankets that cover the set and lenses, and then the whole thing roped to the pallet They arrive safely.
In the case of the two 1200s, they have the ceiling bracket on each one, and the best way I've seen to send the set with the bracket attached is to build up the pallet front and back with some 1X2 and 2X4s to support the projector so that the bracket hangs under it.
then cover the whole thing with cardboard or moving blankets.
So don't overthink this too much.
Am sending the customer the money order tomorrow via air, and he emailed saying he'd be back in Asheville around Nov 12-13 or so.
once he confirms he has the funds, I'll get the two of you each other's information.

The lenses extend out the front of the set about 90-100mm.
