So I had just hooked up my popcorn hour (since my HTPC MB just died) via a HD fury to my BD808s and looked forward to enjoy my first movie on my new projector. Let the projector heat up while I was in the kitchen cooking. All of the sudden I see a blue flash from the living room and a loud BANG! Sounded expensive... I rushed over to unplug the projector but noticed that the picture was fine on the screen before I got hold of the cord. Perhaps something not in use, like the IRIS or an input not in use, but this didn't made any sense. I let it discharge for 30 minutes and then opened it to find this:
Burn mark.
High voltage.
Gap.
The high voltage had jumped to the chassis which shows as a mark but my fingerprints really stands out in a picture taken with a flash. Point of impact was the cable itself which is strange from the state of it (looks solid). The only concern is that the cap/connector of the HV lead is not fully inserted, but this is several cm away from the burn mark.
My experience with high voltage is limited to doing calculations on HV transmission lines in school and verifying EN60335 (CE mark) compliance by shooting HV ESD, HV surge and HV burst on our products and remembering to have one hand in my pocket while doing so.
Any suggested course of action? Replace the HV lead? Isolate the chassis with Mylar/bo-PET?

Hmm, no replies.
I did a temporary workaround consisting of a thick sheet of Mylar, good for tens of kV, and some heat shrink tube.
This HV lead runs throughout the projector and if there would be a flashover against a PCB, I will not be so lucky the next time. What recommendations are there for replacements?

Generally you would sleeve the HV lead with a clear tubing. If you suspect it's leaking at the end you could add silicone too.

That looks like clear heat shrink tube.
Is the entire length of the cable tubed like this?

No its more like vinyl tubing, youd have to get it very hot to shrink it.

Right. In the electronics world I usually use teflon/PFTE tubing for these situations. Where to get the vinyl one, or a new HV lead?

Ah! Not being a native English speaker means many jokes get lost.  Watching Red dwarf for instance involves hearing the audience laugh ten times more then me, at least for the early episodes.

Couldn't you leave it like this?
I have 4 quads at home and none has the additional clear protection. Maybe you had some dirt on the wire? Or the connection wasn't 100%?

With a name like Winny the very first thing I thought of when I saw it was "Winfield RED" cigarettes!! I thought "another Australian!!!"
You probably don't have them there, but they used to be somewhat of an icon here, referred to as "Winny Reds". On a par with Rothmans non-filter for strength.
You can use whatever you normally use for sleaving the cable, provided its not conductive, and if you use silicone, give it a couple days at least to cure, I wouldn't use Permatex ULTRA BLACK either

Wish I was. Only been there once for a brief moment but it was fantastic. If I would meet a girl from Australia I would not hesitate to move there. But no, my friends gave me my nickname when I was about 10 or so.

Makes perfect sense. One of the questions in an engineering newspaper here was why the reader would get a jolt from the electric fence although he was wearing rubber boots. The correct answer was posted in the next edition, they where black, and just about all black plastic and rubber is coloured using carbon black, or toner powder to you and me, which is conductive. Also, all ESD material like shoes and plastic boxes are always black. The reason is the same, carbon black. I suspect that your Permatex ULTRA BLACK is coloured with the same thing.

I had found that on my 1200x that G2 lead wasn't fully seated onto the board connector, it did cause a small arc but not a loud explosion. Though with HV, who knows. I would check the capacitors on your boards and make sure one of them didn't explode.

This was definitely the case on mine too. Still, the steel sheet was several cm away.
Which boards? Sorry, I'm new to this.
