last night when my Barco 708 was turned on, I heard a series of cracking noises.

I noticed that some of the crackles has an effect on the on screen picture...like, the crackle would correspond to a quick fluctuation in brightness.

They subsided after a minute or so, and then I never heard another one.

Was this arcing?

Last time I used the projector there was no crackling whatsoever...hmmmm.

It's been a long since mine arc'd, but it's a crisp snap if it happens. The image collapses and then immediately comes back.

Do you know if there are any preventative measures for arcing?

Hello

Arcing from the anode leads or splitter can be brought on by extremes of humidity, or insulation starting to fail; one usually hears a snap and there may be an ozone smell. If the problem continues try observing the machine with the covers off in a dark room, you may see a flash indicating the problem spot. If the arcing continues, replacing an anode lead may be indicated.

The crackle is normal and doesn't have any bad side effects. As described above an Arc will snap and that usually does cause a change in image. It also will cause a change in your image if you happen to place your hand in the way of the Arc Laughing
