I watched this a couple years ago and just rewatched it over the past week. Basically it's a seven part miniseries on HBO that was written by the said Rolling Stone reporter after he was embedded. Three of the Marines that were part of the platoon play themselves in the movie and many more marines were brought on to provide guidance in making the miniseries as realistic as possible.
During the invasion these Marines wound up being at the tip of the invasion and at one point were the northern most of all US ground forces. The reporter probably should have gone home, but instead he stuck it out until Baghdad was concurred and rode along with these Marines the entire way.
I highly recommend Generation Kill though you have to be prepared for a realistic experience.
The extras on the BD include the making of, but here is a youtube link to it. I think that if you are interested by the making of than you will like the miniseries.

Rudy was dating my best friend / neighbor for a while a few years ago. Super nice guy. I thought the show was real good. He said it was accurate too. The part where he trains with his gas mask on and runs his ass off still trips me out. You do not want a motivated Marine coming after you.

But seriously, Rudy certainly took his preparations above and beyond if it's factual. And based on his interview I have little doubt that it is true.
