|
|
So, I bought a nice new(to me) Hitachi plasma. It was installed with an outboard receiver being used for all sound, I didn't even think to check the "onboard" sound was working considering the class of install this came out of...
So I get it home and it won't put out sound from anything I try it with...
Any idea where I should look ?
I've checked the obvious culprits, yes the internal speakers are turned on, and I hooked up my phone to the analog inputs, so I tested it with a source I knew was putting out a signal, but still nothing...
I've also tried it with HDMI and other signals, and not received any sound from any kind of input....
Is there some service menu setting the installer might have used to turn off all internal sound processing ??
I've looked through the service manual(its posted online) and haven't seen ANYTHING that even refers to the sound...
The model of tv is an 55HDT79 Hitachi, a very nice looking tv, I just wish the sound would work...
Thanks.
PS: I know its the crt forum, but this is the only place I know of where REALLY knowledgeable people hang out...

Was it an optional thing to buy without sound? A couple Panasonics came out here that way.

I'm sure that's possible, but I haven't found anything to indicate this one doesn't have the capability. And when I switch inputs and such, there's a "thump", like sometimes when you switch inputs on a receiver, coming from the tv. In other words, there seems to be speakers physically installed in it, and they seem to be hooked up to an amplifier at least...

What does it do when you wind the sound up to max with it set to an analog input? Is there a very faint white noise?

I've got two LCD sets right now, a 52" Vizio and a 40" Samsung, both very late vintage where the audio section is completely dead. the chips and circuits are so tiny that it's not worth repairing, I pull the back off both and c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y put them back on.
In the older plasmas though, it should be easier. Follow the speaker wired back and see if there's a tiny fuse that drives just the audio section. Short of that, all you can do is scope the audio path to see if you find out where it's died.

Yes, there is faint white noise, and when I hit "Mute" the white noise goes away. I'm fairly sure there IS sound amplifiers and speakers installed, it just seems like the tv won't output any sound...
I've perused the service manual in hopes of seeing a setting accessible only via the service menu that turns the sound on or off, but didn't recognize anything that would indicate that...
Google doesn't turn up this as being a common enough problem that I've seen even a single post/comment about it...

Thanks for that lead Curt, without pulling anything apart just yet, are audio sections typically a separate board that I could just get from ebay ?
This is a fine looking set, but considering how little one need spend on a new one, its not likely worth spending more than about $50. to repair, the oft repeated conundrum...
PS: Curt, do you have access to any recycling depot's ? I've found they are a treasure chest of electronics, many with very, very, VERY minor issues, often with no issues at all !

Yes, I've given recycling depots about $10K in the last 4-5 years. Lots of crap, I've gotten very selective, but lots of good stuff too!
No, the audio board is usually part of the main CPU board. Just follow the speaker wires back to whatever board they go to, and that's where the issue is. Plasma is about dead in the water anyway, unless it's a 1080p set, so I'd do the external amplifier thing.

Make sure you also select the right audio source in the audio menu, not just the speakers on/off.

Ok, maybe I need some splainin on that one...
There were some options I didn't necessarily totally understand why one would have to choose them in the Audio menu...
Like it wanted me to pick if the source was Stereo, Mono, or SAP ?? Why would I ever have to choose that ? Also, I was wondering what kind of choice to make on the players HDMI audio output choices...Do I choose SPDIF ?
Gone are the days of just plugging in the cables till sound comes out....hahaha...

Make sure whatever you are driving it with is not set up to strip the audio out of the hdmi if that
Is how you are conne ting it. Many pvr's , bluray players etc have the option of
Not sending the audio along if the user wants to send the audio optically or coax
To an older non hdmi 7.1 receiver for external decoding and amplification
Good luck !

Well, yeah... I downloaded the user manual for that plasma and it also mentioned 3 audio source selects in the Audio menu.
I actually wondered if you replied in the wrong thread by accident with a classic CRT problem.
Boy do I remember when my first HV splitter gave up the ghost. Scared the crap out of me! Was a Hitachi RP set.
Shame... it had a really good picture, but the part was NLA.
