I have an 8500 that is doing something weird. Every once in a while, when a large section of the screen is white, a bunch of vibrating, horizontal black lines show up. They go away once the screen gets darker again. Also, if I turn the projector off for about 30 seconds, the problem goes away. Any ideas as to what this is? I can post pictures if that helps.

Okay, it happened again tonight, and I've embedded a picture of what it looks like. You have to view it in its full size to see the lines clearly. They are more pronounced in real life; the camera didn't do a great job of capturing what was happening, given the low light in the room.

Also, a couple more pieces of pertinent information: when it starts doing this, the projector makes a scraping sound. The sound only happens when the lines appear, so when darker scenes are playing, the sound is absent. But again, I turn it off and then back on, and it goes away.

Any help figuring this out would be much appreciated.

Is the projector ceiling mounted??

Maybe the wiring loom is touching a fan??

Hello

Possible leaking anode lead on one tube. Next time you see this, look in the lenses and see if it is one tube or all tubes.

It is ceiling mounted. How would I check to see if the wiring loom is touching a fan?

Not sure about a ground strap. I'll have to check.

Tim, I think it's all three tubes, but I'll double-check the next time it happens.

Hello

There is a plate to remove to access the fans but most ceiling mounts will be in your way, and a drooping wire would be a continuous noise

The scraping noise is definitely coming from the fan area, and I checked it today when it happened and it was all three tubes.

Unplug the projector and do not use it until you can see if wires are in the fans. The internal wire harnesses would be very difficult to replace.

I did as you said, and sure enough, there was a drooping wire resting on one of the fans. Now that I've fixed it, hopefully the problem will go away. If it doesn't, I'll check back. Thanks for the advice.

So it turns out that the drooping wire was not the problem. I've narrowed it down, though. It happened again tonight, and interestingly enough, it happened as soon as I switched from 720p to 1080p. The scraping noise is coming from the HVPS (which is across from the LVPS, right?). I took the front cover off (while it the projector was off) to make sure, and the noise is definitely coming from the HVPS. Another key fact; the lines and the noise will go away if I drop the contrast down to about 25-30, but once I push it back up to its normal range, the lines and noise return. Any thoughts?

I still need to check to see if it has it, as I thought I'd fixed it by fixing the drooping wire. If I put the ground wire on, what will it do to fix whatever is happening in the HVPS?

Well if you know its a HVPS problem, then i dont think it will change anything.

But on some Marquee the floating ground can create some noise, and on one of mine it was very clear horisontal lines.. So it was a just a wild shot, but for sure it wont hurt anything to ground the convergence board.

Got it. I'll definitely give it a shot and see if that helps. Thanks.

maybe a partial failure in the G2 section of the HVPS, which fortunately is repairable since it's not on the potted side. The noise could be one of the large FET's going out.
You do have the newer "issue 3" HVPS in that machine so it's a pretty good HVPS overall. I would run it at 720P, I think the 8500 looks great at 720P. If the issue shows up again at the lower rez. then you know it's progressive. If it doesn't come back, then you don't have to do anything.
