Working on my Mazda 3 again. Sending it into the shop as the USB jack died last week, but that's another tale.. (I didn't do nuffin').

What I want to do is put in some tuneup tweeters in the area where the existing ones are. When I got the car, I thought they weren't working, as I had to crank the treble control to +6 (max) to get anything out of them. Yes, they are that inefficient. I real-timed them when I put my new stereo in, and they literally roll off at 4Khz, and I've got my eq at +12db at 8"khz to get anything out of them.

So, it's replacement time. the problem is, these tweets are located in the little triangular bit of plastic that covers the side mirror screws, so there's no room behind the tweeter, and it's a really small footprint. I really don't want to carve up my door panels since I suck at installations, and ideally I'd mount some tweets on top of the existing holes.

I've done the Pyramid cheap crap route before, and you get what you pay for. What I want is a soft dome tweeter ideally.

I remember KEF making some nice ones years ago, but they are discontinued. They were called the KAR series. there's a couple of in door pairs on ebay, but a bit pricy, although I don't mind spending the money.

I've found these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-XS-H20S-13-16-260-W-Car-Tweeters-Set-FREE-CELL-ANTENNA-/221248663941?pt=Car_Speakers&hash=item338372b185

or

If anyone has anything lying around, that would be great, or any recommendations for ones that sound decent, I'm listening. My tastes in music are all over the place, but I want a decent high end that isn't shrill.

I'm changing the door speakers from 5 X 7 to 5 1/2" Parts Express ones that I bought a couple of years ago. I'd be open to a component system as well if I need to spend $$ on getting a matched woofer/tweeter set. I'm rolling the door speakers off at about 100hz, as my dual Fosgate 12's take over from there.

You know, you may not like this but some flat panels come with a separate small tweeter like that and they don't sound to bad. Surely you must of run into these. Wouldn't hurt to just hook them up and try if you have any laying around. I have lots and I haven't been doing many flat panels for quite some time now.

Could always check out some Boston Acoustics tweeters, they make some of those micro car tweeters all the new cars has, check them out on ebay, that's where I've seen them

Well I finally got the door panels off, and now it turns out I need 5 1/4" woofers as well, so I may as well look at component kits. I'll need to post a pix of the magnet on this 'woofer' that's in the door. the speaker itself has a nice long throw, but the magnet may be high power, but weighs maybe 2 oz? No wonder it sounds like crap!

Those 6" woofers from Parts Express don't fit, they're too big, although the mounting kit says it will work. Nada, not without massive mods...Sad Back to ebay I go...

This is what's going in:

Refurbs right from Polk, so I can't really go wrong I don't think. Now to see if I can put 4 6" midbass speakers into the back deck..Smile
