What would cause the brightness to not work properly? If I have it above say 30 on the setting, the colors bleed to bright and the picture looks bad. washed out & dark. Contrast seems to work normal
If i turn it way down to minimum, the color returns to normal. turn it up and the colors are to bright and the brighness is way off.

The red tube looks orange now

Any ideas?

Larry, contrast and brightness are actually a bit of a misnomer, or at least inarticulately named.

Contrast is technically the "white point" setting, meaning that you're increasing or decreasing how bright the brightest parts of the picture can get. The contrast setting is probably more along the lines of what people think of when they think of how to adjust how "bright" the picture is. To set contrast on a CRT, generally you want to set it as high as you can without losing any of the brightest shades of white, or without "blooming" the picture, which means that fine detail starts to get fuzzy.

Brightness is technically the "black point" setting, meaning that you're increasing or decreasing how bright the dark end of the picture can get. Increasing brightness elevates the black point, making the whole picture grey, and washing out the colors. To set brightness on a CRT, generally you want to set it as low as you can without losing any of the darkest shades of gray into black.

To set either, you really need a basic test patterns DVD or Blu-ray. Spend half an hour and read some of the basics from Kal's excellent GREYSCALE & COLOUR CALIBRATION FOR DUMMIES guide. Highly recommended.

You don't understand, Something is going on/out in the projector. I normally run brightness about at 50, contrast at 80.

But now I can't get a "normal" picture with any brightness setting. It looks way to dark even if I turn the brightness up full max.

Then the colors are WAY to bright, their bleeding. the red tube is orange now

I've never seen the set do this before. It's a Tech issue

RGBVH hookup.

Sorry, Larry... I missed that this was something new/wrong. The 1272 is getting really old, and it's not uncommon for components to fail, or even more likely connectors or components to be loose.

Do the menus and test patterns display normally, with only the external signal displayed wrong, or is it both?

Curt will probably be able to tell you exactly which board to check.

Larry,
Just my 2 cents, I would not put any money in to the 1272, Curt has a great deal on a Sony G70.

Problem I have is it's ceiling mounted, thru sheetrock on a vaulted ceiling. It was a royal pain in the attic , mounting running the cables etc and I don't want to go thru that again.
And I don't know much about setting up a pj

If i could keep a new pj in the same spot, I'd consider it

I had a similar problem in the past, did you try another input signal? (different source on input B)

That problem ended up being the CA Blue board
